Show THE SENTINEL Copperview Center Local physician group takes unique look at spinal injury and pain Salt Lake City physician group is taking a unique look at a look spinal injury and pain like no one else in the world. The Western group, Neurological Associates, has developed in conjunction with and under the sponsorship of Technicare (a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary) the world's first vertical CT scanner. It performs a spine scan while the patient is standing in the g upright, position. Previously CT scans were done with the patient lying on his or her back. Computerizing Tomography (CT) Scanning represents dramatic benefits for patient and physician alike by replacing with its myelography, associated long, pointed needle e and cooking substance, while providing richly enhanced, more precise and accurate A pictures of the body. Dr. Dennis D. Thoen, a Western at neurologist Neurological, began to reason with the idea of vertical scanning because of the great number of herniated discs he was seeing through his practice. "The annulus or outer wrapping or membrane of the interdisc becomes vertebral weakened with certain types of back injuries," Dr. Thoen says. "Frequently this becomes hard to the because diagnose weakened area is sometimes not readily apparent with conventional CT scanning; but this : weight-bearin- vertically-oriente- scanner d allows us to examine the disc when the patient is in the g erect normal, he adds. standing position," WNA is currently studying the effect of "loading" the spine by having the patient bear weight weight-bearin- oil-lik- presents awards The Copperview Community Center, an agency of Salt Lake County Parks, Recreation, and Centers, held its Second Annual Employee's on the shoulders. Physicians can then study the extent of disc Multi-Purpo- se bulging that occurs when the spine is bearing the weight of additional load upon the human body. This stress test is aimed at distinguishing persons with a normal, healthy intervertebral disc from those with a weakened portion of disc that could predispose to problems or injury in future lifting or bending activities. weight-bearin- Appreciation 14. TheDinner center, Wednesday, Dec. which provides thousands of recreational and social services annually, reviewed the year's successes while enjoying dinner provided by the Center's Citizens Advisory Board. The center also took this opportunity to recognize its second of the recipients "Employe of the Year Recognition Program." Sharon Nelson, a socialization teacher, and JoAnn Lander, a child care specialist, were this year's recipients. These individuals were nominated by fellow employes for their outstanding accomplishments during the 1983 calendar year. The presentation, made by Mike Peterson, center director, included a plaque displaying their names which will be permanently displayed in the center. g, The scanner, which looks somewhat like a Star Wars invention, works just as a traditional scanner, with a large center hole that the patient passes through, doughnut-shape- d pictures. allowing for the y It has been used to evaluate over 600rwtientsatWNA. X-ra- "In the patients that have been studied to this date, we have found that in some situations disc herniations do bulge more in the standing rather than in a n supine or position," Dr. Thoen notes. "We have also seen that spinal stenosis or narrowing of the spinal canal is more readily apparent when standing," he continues, adding, "We expect that vertical CT spine scanning with additional weight on the shoulders will become extremely important in a predictive sense, letting us distinguish between individuals with strong discs and those who may have trouble with lifting or other vigorous activity." lying-dow- r - -- A s 2020Hn H- - Id - Western Chuck-A-Ram- i5s 254-392- Neurological a general Libraries offer much more than "kid stuff." Rose said that, although UTech has the facilities for this type of training, it is often more convenient for potential students who live in the Sandy and West and South Jordan areas to take classes at the Jordan District facility located at 825 E. 9085 S.
