Show THESENTINEL Local team places third in national Whirly Ball meet What would vou call a same that is part basketball, part hockey, and part bumper cars? Stan Mangum, now a resident of Murray, called it Whirly Ball when he created it four years ago. Today it is played in just about every corner of the country and is continuing to grow in popularity and prestige. Yet, until recently, the sport was relatively unknown here in Utah, by most people that it is. Three facilities for the sport were eventually built here in Salt Lake County, including one on 900 E. near 9000 S. in Sandy. But, two of those were forced to close, leaving the West Valley court as the state's lone facility. But, despite those setbacks, a team of players drawn mostly from the Midvale area went on to place third in 'the national tournament held on Dec. in Las Vegas. That team is comprised of Dave Jensen, Danny Hardman, Jim Johnson, Jim Wiseman, and Randy But, once plays gets underway any similarity to bumper cars vanishes very quickly. The cars are much smaller, with room for only one and they have no contact arm running up the ceiling to bring in power. Whirly Ball cars pick up their energy from an electrified metal floor and all a contestant need do is step on a pedal to propel the vehicle about the 80 by 40 foot court at speeds of up to seven miles per hour. Steering is accomplished with a handle that rotates 360 degrees. The only other equipment is a racquet, similar to the one used in and a whiffle ball. The idea is scoop up the ball and flip it through a 15 inch circle surrounded by a net at each end of the court, and, of course, keep your opponent from doing likewise. Most scores are worth two points, but a shot of from past halfcourt is worth three. There are also penalty points awarded for such infractions as ramming, racquet slapping, and holding. The team with the ball must attempt a shot within 30 seconds of taking possession. Games are 30 minutes long. "I love the idea of an original sport," stated player Dave Jensen of Midvale. "I like doing original things and you've got to admit this is something different. Besides it's really fun." Jensen also admitted a love of jai-ala- 0 Brockman. call They themselves The because that was the margin of victory in the team's first win. At first glance Whirly Ball might seem like a streamlined version of the bumper cars seen at any major amusement park. Sixty-Niner- s, Deer feeding on Wasatch Front The Salt Lake City headquarters of the Division of Wildlife Resources has received hundreds of calls this week from people concerned about hungry deer along the Wasatch Front. Snows have forced deer into residential areas along the east benches where they're eating shrubs and bushes in area yards. Walt Fitzgerald, a big game biologist for the division, says while a few complaint calls have come in most people want to help the deer by feeding them. He says commercial feeds are available through local feed stores. If specially prepared deer pellets aren't available, Fitzgerald says rabbit, goat or sheep pellets will work. But Fitzgerald warns people whp.'2 begin, feeding ... to be, prepared to continue feeding for the.; next 60 to 90 days. He suggests that people who want to help should contact local wildlife or outdoor clubs in their areas who may coordinate emergency deer feeding programs. Rex Willden, spokesman for the committee, said the grant is part of an ongoing program of financial assistance to public conservation efforts. Willden says his organization, fnade up primarily of members of the Salt Lake County Fish and; Game ' Association, cuts Christmas trees on state, property every : year and sells them to make money for the program. Ranch superintendent Hal Wood says the traditional sleigh rides through the meadow to view hundreds of majestic Rocky Mountain elk from just a few feet away will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays, and from 1 to 4 p.m. on weekdays. Jack Division spokesman Rensel says about 450 elk made it to the ranch before heavy snows closed in. northern Rensel, regional supervisor for the Division of Wildlife elk the Resources, says represent only half of the normal wintering population at the ranch. ."Many of the elk that traditionally winter at the ranch were cut off 'by the heavy snows and just couldn't make it," he added. These animals have dropped into lower valleys in Morgan County, where they're causing problems by feeding on haystacks. The division has started an emergency feeding program on state land near Croydon in Morgan County to ease the problem there and help the hungry elk through a hard winter. Hardware Ranch is part of the division's big game management programs aimed at miniwinter agricultural mizing damage in Cache County. Ranch hands feed the elk several thousand bales of hay every year, hay which is grown on meadows at the ranch during the summer. n The unique sleigh rides and visitors center at Hardware Ranch attract visitors from around the world. One of the group happened to have a coupon for a free game one night so they tried it and got hooked. "In our first game we got stomped by an all girls team by 5? points, but we just kept after it," he continued. "We've been together for three years now, making us one of the most teams around. experienced Going into the Las Vegas tourney we were seeded number one." Dave believes that the sport will catch fire in Utah just as it has in other parts of the country. Competition is intense and fast paced and it has the advantage of being an all weather sport. "It's not just a game for big athletes either," added Dave. "People from nine to ninety can all play it and enjoy it." . Highway Patrol will start crackdown on sunscreening on vehicle Sunscreening and altered vehicle suspensions will be the target of a stepped-uenforcement effort by the Utah Highway Patrol beginning the new year. Utah law has long made it illegal to use sunscreening devices on the windshields or side windows to the left and right of the driver. Approved sunscreening can be used on the side windows behind the driver and on the rear windows, but the vehicle must also have left and right outside mirrors. The patrol will be enforcing recently passed legislation specifying maximum bumper height on cars and trucks. Passenger car bumpers cannot exceed 22 inches above the pavement, trucks up to 4,500 pounds gross vehicle weight cannot exceed 26 inches, and trucks up to 10,000 lbs. GVW cannot exceed 30 inches. Exceptions will be made for any additional height resulting from oversize tires, but only for the amount added by the tires themselves. to Bob Lt. According of the administrator Hayward, U.H.P. "We've not been rejecting sunscreening at our safety inspection stations in the past; but come Jan. 1, that will change." Hayward says safety was the consideration in the decision to get tough on sunscreening and bumper heights. Bumpers are designed to absorb energy from a crash. Illegally high bumpers defeat that purpose when they crash over the top of the bumper of another vehicle. Occupants in a car with a legal and lower bumper are denied the benefit of their own bumper's shock absorption system. Sunscreening reduces visibility at night, particularly on unlit or wet roads. "It's like trying to drive at night with dark sunglasses on," said Hayward.
