Show - THE SENTINEL Section 2 Alt a fakes on Davis; J orda n faces Judge in football finals Friday was a day of upsets in the high school football tournament going on at the University of Utah's Rice Stadium. First the Alta Hawks turned in another solid defensive effort in the top ranked downing 25-Titans Then Davis Olympus dashed Hillcrest High's state hopes by stunning the Huskies 4-- A 7. 21-1- 8. Jordan High's Beetdiggers continued their march to a title by stopping Provo 28--8 on Thursday. The state finals will also be held at the U of U, Jordan meeting Region Six compatriot Judge at 11:30 a.m. and Alta taking on Davis at 2 p.m. Alta's defense set up the Hawks' first two touchdowns and added a safety in the fourth quarter. After Darren Handley recovered a Titan fumble at Olympus' 22, Peter Morley took a screen pass from quarterback Mike Jensen in for the six. Later Todd Thorton came up with a loose ball, leading to Chad Ogden's 55 yard touchdown run. Corey Young added both extra points. Alta got two more points when a punt snap went through the legs of the Oly punted and out of the end zone for a safety that made the score 16-- at the half. Dave Walker caught Olympus quarterback Rich Erickson in the end zone for two more points, but Olympus came back to score on a long pass play. Undaunted, Alta mounted a long drive of its 3-- A 0 with two long runs by Morley moving the ball to the Titan 13. Morley then unloaded a halfback pass to Troy Long for the game winner. Young booted the PAT. "We played well offensively, as well as defensively,", commented Alta coach Doug Berry. "Both teams turned the ball over a lot due to the bad weather, but we took better advantage of those mistakes. Also, Olympus throws the ball more than we do and the cold and rain may have affected them more than us." For Hillcrest, their semi-finwith Davis hinged on three most The critical plays. controversial led to the Dart's winning touchdown, as Davis converted on fourth and 13 with a pass to the Husky three. The pass was low and the Hillcrest staff argued it had been trapped but after an officials' conference it was ruled complete. Earlier on, Hillcrest went for six on fourth down from the Davis half yard line and Rob Hill was called short of the line. Still earlier, a 30 yard screen pass was called back on a clip. looked Huskies The unstoppable in the first half, while their defense was frustrating Davis. Hillcrest opened with a 31 yard field goal Troy Gardner then Bill Robertson threw an 18 yard scoring pass to Marty Haws. Later, Robertson hit Darin Vincent with a 19 yard strike. Haws then ran a two point own, conversion for an 7 halftime lead. Davis cut the margin to 3 on an 80 yard bomb in the third quarter. Their last score came with under two minutes left. "We felt that if we could force them out of their ball control running offense and make them throw the ball, we could control coach them," explained Simonson. "But, they completed a lot of passes in that scoring drive that I don't think they'd ever complete again." On the ground, Hillcrest's Hill had 83 yards and Randy Warner 74, both on 16 carries. Robertson completed 12 of 28 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns. Haws had six receptions for 97 yards and 'one touchdown and Vincent 1 for 20 and six. On the year, Robertson has thrown for 25 touchdowns and Haws has 16 touchdown receptions and 1,000 total yards. Jordan sought the same strategy against Provo as Hillcrest used against Davis: force Provo out of the run and into the air. Jordan was able to hold the Bulldogs to one touchdown and a two point conversion. Jordan's first score came in the first period when quarterback Mike Thompson, on a bootleg, hit Todd Koplin with a 42 yard pass. Moments later, Thompson hit Darrell VanAmen for a five yard touchdown pass. Rob Farnsworth made it on a three yard run midway through the third quarter then added the fourth touchdown on a one yard run early in the fourth. VanAmen kicked four PAT's. Farnsworth ran for 113 yards on nine carries, Thompson completed nine of 17 passes for 166 yards, and Koplin had three catches for 106 yards. 18-- . Thursday, PaQG Nov. 17, 1983 r 1 "We're glad to be facing Judge again for the title," said coach Rick Bojak, "but, I don't think there will be a 31 point margin this time around as Judge has really improved.
