One of the major changes has been the introduction of dance movements into gymnastics routines, especially on the balance beam and in floor exercise. It's a change Colleen Mulvihill feels is definitely for the better. The reason Colleen is so excited about this trend is that it now bridges the gap between the two loves of her life: gymnastics and dance. "I'm both a gymnast who knows a lot about dance and a dancer who knows a little unqiue about gymnastics." Colleen is the daughter of Dick academic interest and leads who Mulvihill, the National Academy of Gymnastics in Eugene, Oregon. Mr Mulvihill is recognized as one of the top women's gymnastics coaches in the United States, so it seemed almost natural that his daughter would take up the sport. Though she qualified for the 1964 U.S. Olympic team and competed in Mexico City with the 1968 team, Colleen retired from the sport at the age of 16. Her journey into the dance world began at the University of from Illinois, which of modern inovativeness dance. Modern dance, reported: Colleen, is almost totally an American creation, the basic idea being a solo performer who has choreographed his or her own work. Its popularity in this country was further enhanced by some major motion pictures built around dance. Meanwhile, are in Europe audiences it. for starving The other reason for the rise in the popularity of dance, Colleen feels, is a new consciousness about the body and physical fitness. "Millions of people all over the country are enrolled in aerobic dance classes these days," she said. Colleen added that she had been kind of a shy person as a gymnast, but what drew her into dancing was the fact it forced her out into the spotlight. She has danced with three of the nation's top companies, including the Mary Jenkins Dance Co. in San Francisco from 1975 to 1979, the David Gordon Co. in New York City and the Judy from 1979-8Podow Co., also in New York from 1981 to 1983.
