The new facility will be housed in the converted stage area of the old Sandy First Ward chapel's cultural hall, located on 400 E. near 159 S. in Sandy. Between 80 to 120 members of the South County's Laotian community, which include 35 who have Joined the LDS church, are expected to attend meetings there. While the branch is under the sponsorship of the Sandy West Stake, those who attend it are drawn from all of the area of Salt Lake County south of 7200 S. According to Laotian branch president, David Shore, the branch was only organized last March, but quickly outgrew its original quarters at the Hillcrest High seminary building and later at the Sandy West Stake Center. Shore stated that the stake had retained the cultural hall at the old Sandy First Ward chapel day, but attend language classes at night. The Laotians making up the branch are people from the cities and towns, as opposed to the H'mong people inhabiting the hill country to the North. All have fled the country because of the intense persecution on the Communist government in Laos brought about by their support of the U.S. presence in Indochina. "If they had not left their homes they would have been killed," Shore explained. "Most of those who escaped found their way to refugee camps in Thailand." Shore told the story of one refugee who had worked for the C.I.A. in Laos. But, after the Communist takeover he was on the run constantly, trying to stay ahead of search parties. He finally gained refuge in Thailand, where he worked for two years to be able to help bring his family out. It was another year, however, before he and his family made their final escape. Today the refugee is the branch clerk. use the basement rooms for offices and classrooms. Painting, carpeting, and chapel and railings were Xerox Machine added together with pews and a pulpit. An open house has been scheduled for this Friday between 4 and 7 p.m. The chapel will be dedicated by Sandy West Stake president Michael Manning on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. But, Shore noted, the new chapel is only part of a wider effort aimed at the Laotian aiding refugees. "We're trying to assist them in finding Jobs and have donated food and clothing items," Shore said. "Last year we put together a Thanksgiving dinner and our aided 35 families." However, Shore added that there has been no attempt to force the LDS faith on any of the refugees or make them give up their Laotian customs. "We hope that we can teach them our customs and add those to their Laotian customs," Shore continued.
