Whether you know it or not, that's the story of your life. That subconscious picture (self-imag- e) you have developed of yourself, faulty or true, controls what you do in life. controls what Your don't or go after. It go after, 'you detenninet your "(orrzomy",'' and when you get out of that environment, your first tendency is to get around people like you. I used to wonder why most of my very obese students would not stay with me in my optioning classes. It was obvious to me that they were in the right place, but I found them to be irresponsible, often deceitful, sometimes stretching the truth, and many, eventually, .. dropping out of the program. Then it dawned on me that the bulk of my students, the ones that hang in there are already in fairly good condition. You see, they are in their comfort zone. They are around people just like them, reasonably thin and healthy. They don't have to rationalize and find excuses for not doing what is best for them. Incidentally, many of the obese come back arid try again, but dropping out and coming back is the story of their lives. When you become obese you get used to that gained weight, so you rationalize and build "Wind spots." self-ima- ge 1 For example, you don't go nude in front of mirrors and you don't really see your problem, plus the fact that rationalization and excuses make the condition tolerable, at least for awhile. I sometimes think the obese students would stay with me if I were "fat" like them, or had everyone in the class fat and hidden from view. We probably get them too faraway from their comfort zone by being thin, fit, very active and viewed by everyone as fit people. Control the Mind This whole business boils down to the fact that what your mind can conceive, you can achieve. Motivation comes from helping people modify their comfort zone. And I hasten to add that fear is not the best route to take, because when the pressure (fear) is removed, you will go you change your That's why you have to see yourself as a thin, person and set goals accordingly, because what you see is what you eventually get. d Goal setting must be k own and, by your incidentally, the goal is not just to lose so many pounds, but to maintain it as a life style after you get thin. Too many people set the goal only to lose x number of pounds and when they lose it, they somehow return to the original obese condition. back-unle- self-imag- ss e.
