Yalow, who spoke on campus recently, says fewer women become physicists because they lack a strong math background, as evidenced in lower math scores. Men entering the U in for instance, 1979, averaged 20.3 out of 36 possible points on the entrance ACT college math exams. Women scored 16.9. "You can't reverse that trend on the college or graduate level," stresses Yalow. "It must be done earlier." Attempts are being made in Utah to do just that. Members of the e NetUtah work are trying to in stimulate interest math by sponsoring a e conference for junior high and high school girls. Members say the conference offers hands-oexperience so participants can see that math is fun and useful. As part of the conference, the participants tour biology, chemistry and other departments to meet in these women Lack of professions. female role models, contends a female graduate student in math, may be one reason women tend to shy away from math. "When children start getting into the really interesting material in math, classes are almost always taught by men," says Tracy Whelan, one of four female graduate students in the math "As for department. female role models. math-relate- le math-relate- a ycss i:cixa emit DRAPERY CLGAUIUG Math-Scienc- h)R LltZJ aEAt:i::3 math-scienc- n math-oriente- wmM III d they're practically nonexistent." A 1976 study concluded that in most families fathers help with math homework once a child reaches seventh grade. This male role model, it reinforces the said, message that men can do math and women can't. Research suggests that women lose interest in math during the transition from arithmetic to A 1973 mathematics. and Jacklin Maccoby Study reported that girls and boys begin with equal math abilities. Then in junior high school, the message suddenly becomes, "It's unladylike to take algebra ; math is a male domain." After age 13, boys move ahead in math and girls lag behind, with the gap widening each additional school year. "If girls were pushed as hard as boys, more would enter math-relate- d fields," contends Beth Summerhays, director of the University Placement Center. "Females are equally bright and mentally alert but their aptitudes are changed for social reasons." Some math fears are realistic, stresses Dr. Kathleen Boggs, associate director of the U Counseling Center. Those who have had bad experiences with math or who have only taken math because it was required can build a anticipatory "negative anxiety," she says. In other words, math makes them cringe. Women, she says, certainly aren't the only ones afraid of math. But Dr. Karen Beck, one of two women math instructors at the U of U, has found that more women in her classes have an attitude about math. If they do poorly in one class, they get discouraged and drop out of the math program she Men, altogether. to more are likely says, repeat failed courses. Most experts agreed that taking an early, positive approach to math is the best tool in the fight against math for men or anxiety women. "The younger you are, the easier it is to learning math," says chairman Taylor. "A child's mind is designed for learning." Parents and educators too often perpetuate fears by telling children math is hard. "Children learn that math isn't fun, it's hard work and only 'brains' study math," says graduate student Mary Chambers. Parents and schools, she says, spend time and money developing musical talent; mathematical talent should be regarded as equally precious, and it shold be looked for in both men and women.
