Show THE SENTINEL Fitness Tips By Dr. Dale Nelson Professor of Health, Physical Education and Recreation Utah State University Do you know that an optional level of blood pressure under resting conditions should be under 12075 to insure living a longer and healthier life? I'm finding an unusually large number of college-ag- e students, in good and supposedly healthy blood with condition, physical too pressure readings high for their best long-terhealth. The red flag is also waving as a warning to the general populace. Don't ignore it! Read on, your health may be on the line. What Your Pressure Should Be Both systolic (upper reading) and diastolic (lower reading) are important. People who have a diastolic pressure between 85 and 94 are 1.84 times as likely to have disease heart from fatty cholesterol deposits as people with m a pressure of 75. Those with a systolic pressure of 131 to 138 area 1.7 times as likely to develop heart disease as people with a pressure of 120 (and 105 would be still better ) . Now, even though we arbitrarily say your pressure should be under 14090, it would be best if it were under 12075. For adults anything below 9060 is considered low, but it doesn't matter how low it is as long as it doesn't produce symptoms such as fainting. Screening for high blood pressure should start early. A small child's systolic pressure should not exceed 110. Influences BP There are a large number of people with moderately elevated blood pressure who can significantly lower their pressure by Life-sty- le Brian S. Army Baker, son of Mr and Mrs Rod L. For older people, make walking a regular habit. Becoming thin is not just losing pounds. It mean getting lean. Your dietary changes will influence the weight problem, too. you might even consider becoming a vegetarian. Their diets are low in fat and cholesterol. Reduce your salt intake. Most people consume far too much. There is also some evidence that a high potassium intake protects against high blood pressure, and fruits are high in potassium, which is another reason for the fruit and vegetable route. Cut out beverages that contain caffeine and note that alcohol can cause high blood pressure, according to a study reported in the 1977 New England Journal of Medicine. As a group, smokers tend to have higher blood pressure. A part of this may be due to stress, since smokers often respond to stress by smoking. Everyone knows that nicotine increases blood pressure, so not smoking is a must on the change list. I alluded to stress as a cause of high pressure, which signifies the importance of relaxation and removal of stress in one's life. This isn't always easy, but a good activity program will help to release tensions, and an evaluation of one's values will permit most of us to make some helpful adjustments in eliminating sources of stressful living. Finally, we must remember that high blood pressure and heart disease are silent killers. They extract their toll over long periods of time.
