Show Thursday, November 13, 1980 THE SENTINEL 2 Page Opo moon School CflD Ours (Disservice by state Utah State Board of Education probably did more to assure the success of the next tax limitation effort in Utah than any organization ever has. The ballots were barely counted when the state board announced that they would seek $113 million more for education next year from the state legislature. Education groups statewide of the camthe forefront in were limitation. to the tax paign defeat The defeat of the tax limitation initiatives did not provide governments with a blank check to go on growing. It merely said, "we don't like this plan but we are going to keep our eye on you to see if you Dial ira savings." Any government agency that is so arrogant not to realize that the public is going to continue to watch how its tax dollars are spent is in for a shock. Instead of trying to milk the public of more tax dollars the state education people should be trying to find ways not only to eliminate waste in their own department but to help the local school district eliminate waste. Local state school board representative Rodney Dahl did disagree with part of the proposed increases that was recommended by the state school administrators. 255-355- Is something bugging you? She said that she felt the school district should have a very open policy on equipment usage as long as the individual has the knowledge necessary to operate it. She added that while working as an aide in the school she had several opportunities to use school equipment and very much ap- Mnti is. The possibility of a name change was brought up in a recent issue of the city's newsletter. "The town is south of what?" it asked, suggesting that the name be changed to "Jordan City" instead. During the Nov. 4 general election, residents were asked to complete a survey on the proposal. An overwhelming majority instructed the city council to "leave things the way they are." Of the 2,603 surveys completed, 364 favored a change while 2,239 were against it. Mayor Ted Lee told the Sentinel that the issue was first raised several years ago when the city severed county contracts and began taking over its own services. As officials dealt with people outside the valley on orders and other matters of business, the question frequently came up "Where is South Jordan? What is it south of?" Everyone knew that South Salt Lake was south of Salt Lake City and that South Ogden was south of Ogden, but few had ever heard of South Jordan and no one knew where Jordan was. Should he tell him to lower the bar? After walking to the end of the approach lane, Ken tightened his grip on the pole, breathed deeply, and started his sprint to the vaulting pit. His pole caught neatly in its niche on the ground, Ken flew upward, and crashed into the bar. Disaster? No necessarily. One researcher, Margaret M. Clifford, says it's likely that parents hurt students by not allowing them to know failure. She says school practices designed to maximize success in students may be lowering anxiety, . frustration and perseverance too far in students. If that happens, it will produce students who avoid taking risks, can't tolerate imperfect performance, and retreat when they encounter failure. The researcher's view is that school practices that create excessive failure as well as those that give rise to excessive success by of eliminating almost all chances ' failure are detrimental. This research supports the idea that some failure can be beneficial to later performance. Those findings probably apply to most aspects of life. If Ken's dad had told his son to lower the bar to twelve-siit would have increased his chances of getting over it. But if might have robbed the boy of a chance to miss, analyze his performance, decide what he did wrong, try again, correct the problems, and set a new record for himself. Failure can be good for a young person if he or she learns from it, and the parent who shields a youngster from any failure may be doing damage to the child. pole-vaulti- x, I 'Hey, Pa, he wants to know who shof down S.J.'
