The former Polish espionage chief, Colonel Michael Goleniewski, is quoted as saying that the Soviet KGB penetrated the Shiite Moslem sect in the early 1950s, recruiting Khomeini as one of five top agents in Iran., He said Khomeini reported to a high Iraqi official who in turn passed information to the Soviet KGB through its agents in Warsaw where Goleniewski had his headquarters. There has been no comment on Goleniewski's story from the CIA, which reportedly debriefed the Polish defector after he was granted asylum in the U.S. The CIA rarely if ever reacts to such reports dealing with the shadowy world of intelligence and counterintelligence. And there is no independent way of determining the truth of Goleniewski's claims, as quoted by a California law firm that is negotiating for publication of his memoirs. there are other indications that Iran may very well have been the work of the Soviet intelligence apparatus in furtherance of Moscow's goal of gaining control over Iran, and ultimately, the Persian Gulf area. entire h , Sadegh Ghotbzadeh, Iran's acting foreign minister and former chief of the country's radio and television outlets, is said to have been a radical leader of demonstrations in the e U.S. while a student at Georgetown However, the crisis in - ht - -;- - propaganda broadcasts that poured from Radio Moscow and a Persian-tongu- e transmitter at Baku, near the Soviet border with Iran. No one can say for certain whether any of the reports of Soviet KGB involvement are ': true or not. But former CIA Director James Schlesinger has predicted that once Iran has collapsed in total chaos and anarchy, the Communist Tudeh party almost certainly will move in and pick up the pieces. Having acquiesced in the downfall of the shah, the U.S. opened the way not to the moderate forces we naively thought would take over, but to mob rule. And there's an ironic footnote to the decline of America's presence in Iran: When, after the embassy seizure, the White House turned to the CIA for background details on the principle figures in Iran's Revolutionary Council, the CIA could supply little or no information. The reason: The CIA has had its capabilities gutted by American critics in the wake of Watergate. Our nation's vulnerability has never been more starkly revealed. Philip C. The precious freedom to speak what you think has been won only after centuries of oppression and domination. After the printing press was invented, kings and rulers lost little time in gaining absolute control of this new means of spreading knowledge and opinion. The English Chief Justice Scroggs said in 1687: "When, by the king's command, we were to give in our opinion what was to be done in point of the regulation of the press ; we did all subscribe, that to print or publish any newspaper or pamphlets of news whatsoever is illegal; that it is a manifest intent to the breach of the peace, and they may be proceeded against by law for an illegal thing. Suppose now that this thing is not scandalous, what then? If there had been no reflection in this book at all, yet it is "illicite," and the author ought to be convicted for it. And that is for a public notice to all people, and especially printers and booksellers, that they ought to print no book or pamphlet of news whatsoever, without authority.' The release was labeled "Turtle and Tortoise to be Considered at Public Meetings in Iowa and Utah." Now it seems that the Fish and Wildlife Service has become concerned about the future of the Illinois mud turtle and the Beaver Dam Slope population of the Desert Tortoise. Wow! Do you suppose that the Desert Tortoise is going to turn into another Snail Darter for :. Utah? According to the release the critical habitat for the Desert Tortoise in Utah is on Federal lands managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. It consists of 33 square miles in southwestern Washington County, bordered by the Beaver Dam Wash on the west, the Beaver Dam Mountains on the east and by various geological formations on the north and south. Those who favor contracting say that it will save the city money and provide better police protection. Opponents say that's not true. . ; , Only a thorough professional study by outside agencies will be able to solve the problem in a rational way. It seems that police departments are periodically the object of public scorn and that from time to time someone always wants to make drastic changes. The changes shouldn't be made without deep and serious consideration for the public well being. A mandatory evaluation of police departments might be a way to solve the problem. If every police department was subjected to an evaluation, say every five years, and the results of the study made available to the public maybe some of the problems could be 8 3l sstember 7 6 9 10 11 12 13 14 18 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 28 26 27 There is still a need for homes in all price ranges but due to high interest rates the middle price range homes have not been selling and as soon as the interest rates come down, the sales will go up.
