And, according to director of middle schools Glen W. Bateman, it is working very well. When the middle school concept was first being discussed in Jordan District, school administrators visited other districts in the country that had changed to middle schools. They were warned not to try to make the changeover in one year. "They told us we were crazy to change all the junior highs to middle schools in the same year' Bateman says. Jordan administrators were told to take one school and make it a pilot school and change the rest of the schools one by one. However, because of a rapidly increasing school age population and the high cost of building new schools, Jordan chose to change over all schools at once. The one year changeover has not resulted in the problems predicted by other administrators. Most parents seem satisfied with the change, few teachers who moved from an elementary to a middle school have asked to go back, and principals are happy with the situation, Bateman says. Although he stills receives complaints from parents, they concern subjects such as boundary changes that move their child to another schooler take bus service away. He says he has not received about the any complaints curriculum or program changes. The administrators were urged to change slowly because becoming a middle school involves more than just moving the sixth grade to junior high and the ninth grade to high school. The different student age bracket between a junior high and a middle school requires a different program. "We wanted to get away from the school," philosophy of a mini-hig- h Bateman says. "We wanted it to be different." The structure of the social school day, athletics, activities, and grading systems have all changed somewhat to meet the needs of the new age group. Sixth grade students still spend most of the school day with one 'teacher or a team of teachers. However, they now spend the other hours with specialty teachers for such classes as music, art, physical education, and survey classes in foreign languages, homemaking, and industrial arts. Unlike a regular junior high program, seventh graders now have a three period block of time taught by either one teacher or a team of teachers, depending on the school they attend. They may move from class to class as in a junior high or spend the three periods in one ' (Occasional assemblies, such as play if each school t has several thoseYat Thanksgiving and teams competing against each other. Bateman says the choice is up to the school, but the team teaching concept is stressed. Eighth graders still have a seven period schedule with seven different teachers. They also have a greater choice in the classes they can take than do sixth and seventh graders. Eighth graders still have a chance to take most of the electives they were offered in junior highs. Sixth and seventh graders, however, have more required classes than eighth graders and therefore, less unassignedtime. -- ,'-- er ; . er Athletic programs have also changed.
