Skip hopped out of the gutter onto the street, and e Bragg hit him with his tricycle." For as long as I can remember, we've always gotten scared at our house when mom starts a sentence because "Remember we know she's going to finish with "Well, he died." Lately, mom hasn't done that to us. But yesterday, the memory of past shocks was revived while I was at my friend Red's house. My old Suzie burst into buddy's the kitchen after school. she "Daddy," exploded, "remember Skip?!" (my blood ran cold). "You mean Skip Walker?" "Yeah, Jay's little brother." "Sure, I remember. What about "I know, daddy. I though it was awful, too." "Why weren't you kids on the what's-his-nam- sidewalk?" demanded my friend. "What's a sidewalk, daddy? Is that like how Skip used to walk? " "No, it isn't, and . . what do you mean, 'how Skip used to walk'?" "Well, Hi Wheeler said he wasn't sure how bad Skip was hurt, but we'd probably have to call him Slide from now on .. ," "How does Hi know that?" I asked. "Oh, Hi knows everything." At this point, Suzie's eyes brightened a bit. "Hey, daddy! I remember what a sidewalk is now! Hi told me it was something we didn't have, but it didn't really matter because we didn't need one, anyway. He said sidewalks are for kids . . . like little Harry "What's-his-nam- e Bragg? Let's see . . . oh yes. That would be Harry." "I know, daddy. I though it was . awful, too." "Is Skip all right?" Tasked. "I don't know!" screamed the little girl, head in hands. "How'd little Harry Bragg turn out?" queried Red. "From his driveway," sniffed Suzie, "Skip didn't have a chance." Red persisted, "What made Skip jump, honey?" "You remember Hi Wheeler, don't you, daddy?" (again, I felt that chill). "Well, he poured water down my back, and I squealed, and that scared Skip, so he turned around to see what was going on, and he stepped into the road at the same time, and that's when that Bragg kid hit him." "That's 'Harry'," emphasized Red. him?" "Well, dad, Skip was comin' home from school, doing that little stutter-ste- p of his, and something terrible happened. .." About them, I could envision mom with a smirk on her face and the obituaries in her hand ... "Oh, no!" exclaimed Red, as he took Suzie in his arms. "What happened?!" 7355 So. 9th East, 8 77 West 3S00 So., 40 West 2nd North, Bountiful what's-his-name- "That's FOOD BARGAIN ANNEX cor GerreA 49 o 11 II M , UJfAppTD CUT ." reminded 'Bragg'," Red.
