Of course the road to the top in the music composition business is long and difficult as a brief study of these composer's lives will tell. But for Cottonwood a Heights man, the road to the top is beginning and thanks to a good boost received the past month, a little shorter. John Allen, 6822 Greenfield Way, was recently named one of the seven national winners in the 1978 American Song Word Competition. Besides receiving $1,000 and 50 percent royalties for his effort in writing lyrics to a Smokey Robinson tune, this represents one of the big breaks John has been hoping for. "I completed a few songs while in high school and I really liked the challenge and opportunity to write songs so I decided to pursue a degree in that field," John said. While at BYU he received formal training on the piano and individual instruction from Dr. Robert Manookin and Merrill Bradshaw. "Both Manookin and Bradshaw are excellent musicians and composers in their own right," John said. This training was interrupted for two years while John served an LDS Church mission in Sweden. Although he didn't pursue music writing while on the mission, John returned home and immediately resumed his composition degree program. Like most students John had to work to support himself through school but other circumstances came up and he had to leave BYU with three years of music composition training behind him. "It was difficult but I was able to get an advertising sales job with the Jordan Valley Sentinel newspaper," he said. In the past five years John has written music and lyrics for some 400 songs. "Of course not all will be top hits," John said. But some have been successful. He currently has a song, published with a music company in Los Angeles and has had some songs played on KSL radio's 'Discovery' series. Then of course there is his recent success with the American Song Word competition. The mind and not magic, according to Hinkson, is the most powerful force known to man, "You can make yourself sick, you can cure yourself, you can even kill yourself, just by thinking it," he says. "But if I went back to school I'd probably get my degree in advertising, because it is real tough to make a living in the composition business," he said. "But one thing is for sure," John added, "I'll never stop trying to write songs." He's on the threshold now, and, who knows, maybe one of his musical ideas just might make it to the top. Family health is the major focus of the master's program. Graduates of the program will be able to serve in ambulatory clinics, health main- tenance organizations, industries, county health departments and hospital departments as well as in private practice with physicians.
