Laura , Miss Gardner was born Mar. 10, 1887 in Salt Lake City, to George D. and Eugenia Huffaker Gardner. She is survived by her sister, Irma Evans, South Jordan; " 11 nieces and six nephews. Funeral was Wednesday and burial was in Murray City Cemetery. Another chapter in a local success story was penned Monday, Feb. 13, as U.S. Congressman Dan Marriott and Midvale Mayor Charles "Chick" Clayton cut a ribbon kicking off the grand opening of the new Gene's Building Supply store, 8245 S. State. The ceremony began a week's activities of specials, luncheons, and promotions for the new Midvale store. But although Gene's Building Supply is now one of the largest employers and one of the most successful operations in Midvale, things weren't always that way. Twenty-on- e years ago Eugene and Delcia Weber decided to go into the building supply business for themselves. So he and his only son, of four children, Eldon, each put $2,000 into a building at 88 E. 8000 S. to begin a business. "That was September of 1957," Eldon said. "It was tough to get that much money together. "We had some jrough times but with the help of Frank Cook and others we were able to keep the business going." Since 1957 Gene's, named after Eugene Weber, has been successful and as con-tiual- ly It is this type of friendly personalized service that has been a trademark of Gene's Building Supply and its employes which now number Rep. Marriott said, "This is one of the great success stories. This story shows the value of the free enterprise system and that with hard work and dedication one can be successful. Later Eldon served an IDS church mission and a stint in the military. He returned to 115. "Construction on the new million facility and building financed by Zion's First National Bank began Sept. 20, 1977 with the move into the new 11,000 square foot building being made Jan. 16," Eldon said. "We're very pleased with the progress over the years," Eldon said. "Our new building has a hardware and and a paint section and garden secdecorating tion. We still have our old g door building with a n plant, large plant, contractor facility and a $1 complete management studies at the University of Utah in 1966 and then became president and owner of the business. "However, Gene is still very much active in the business," Eldon said. "In fact he still rides a bicycle to work every day." Today Gene and Eldon Weber have built a million dollar empire. "Last year we had gross sales between 14 and 15 million dollars," Eldon said. "Eighty percent of our business comes from contractors with the other 20 percent being walk-i- n trade," Eldon said. "It is this walk-itrade we want to increase.'1" "We are real excited to be in the new store," Eldon said, "and we want to thank our neighbors and friends we have developed over the years for this success." n pre-hun- pre-stai- plant." "We also have plans to bring in a railroad spur to the complex," Eldon said.
