Show Fish & Game As the first of Utah's 1969 big game hunting seasons are nearing, the Division of Fish and Game issued a rejuminder to all first-tim- e venile hunters that they must qualify through a hunter safety course before becoming eligible to buy a hunting license. Antelope, archery, deer, and mourning dove hunts are all opening with the next 30 days and over a dozen other hunts will open before the last bird hunts begin in early November. State law requires any person under 21 years of age to show a proper certificate when applying for their first hunting license. Those over 16 may present a certificate showing they have passed equivalent training in the armed services, ROTC, NRA or show their hunting license from a previous year. For information on a training class in your area, call the Fish and Game office or contact a local conservation officer. All hunters 16 and under must show the blue hunter safety card as proof of passing the hunter safety course when purchasing any hunting license. a rocket net in an area where nearly 500 band-taile- d pigeons were coming in for grain. There is no band-tailehunting in Utah although some other western states have hunting seasons. Wintering areas, for birds found in Utah during the summer is probably Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico. Band-tailepigeons are a bird and are considered sporting birds to hunt. Brood counts and roadside counts are the two surveys underway on the eight game birds hunted in Utah. Fish and Game officers will be out at daylight each morning on brood counts of grouse, partridge, quail and turkeys. This survey is designated to determine annual production of young birds. Roadside counts are made each year over standardized routes and provide annual production data plus a trend of birds per mile which can be compared to counts of previous years and thus give an indication of the population level. Conservation officers vill be conducting surveys on chukars, Hunpheasants, garians, sage grouse, ruffed grouse, blue grouse, quail, and wild turkeys. The information gained on these surveys will be compiled with the data gained earlier in other surveys and presented to the Fish and Game Board on Aug. 20 when the board will set this fall's bird hunts. tory animals.
