The Union Second Ward choir and the Union Sixth Ward choir furnished the music for the East Jordan Stake Conference held in Union last Sunday. Winners Named in Draper Competition Lecture To Be Held at Mountview A lecture on "Civil Turmoil Cause and Cure" will be given by Rev. E. F. Yearling at the Mountainview elementary school, 1651 E. 7000 South on Oct. 28. Other lectures are being held Thursday evening at the Howard R. Driggs elementary school and at the Ladies Literary Club, 850 E. South Temple, Salt Lake on Friday. Halloween Plans Made For Youngsters Halloween party will be held for all West Jordan children from the area of the new Westvale and the West Jordan elementary schools at the West Jordan elementary school on Halloween night, Oct. 31. The party is for the pre school children up to and including the sixth grades. The party is being given by the PTA and teachers of both schools. The Lions Club of West Jordan has provided the money for the generous treats. The American Legion is furnishing the spook alley. Prizes will be given for costumes. A movie will be shown. Police will be on the school grounds and children are all asked not to be on the streets to trick or treat. Moller, first Mrs Thelma L. counselor; Ainsworth, second counselor. Roy Brown was sustained Sunday as second counselor in the East Jordan Stake Presidency. He succeeds Ralph E. Jensen as counselor to Pres. Richard F. North. Pres. Brown has had wide experience in church work and is currently serving on the priesthood genealogy committee in addition to being Gen- ealogical Society. Pres. Brown and his wife, Evelyn, are the parents of three daughters and one son. He is a partner in the CPA firm of Brown & Jarman. Jordan Stake MIA will show the film, "Let It Rain," at the Granite Stake house, Nov. at 7:30 p.m. Later. Jacob Pate moved to Greenwood Ave where he developed water on his farm and used it to run water pow- er machinery, grindstones, washers, and other machines. He built ponds to hold the water and in winter put up ice in sawdust and sold it to the local community. One year a Halloween par-tv rolled the mill stone down to the old Union Ward House and placed it on the front steps. The stone was moved out on the church grounds, and when Union Fort Days celebration was organized and held on the church grounds at 900 East and Union Ave., the stone was used as a base for the flag pole. When the church grounds were sold in 1964 a committee was organized to move the flag pole and use it as a monument, with Ira Proctor as chairman. The flag pole and monument were dedicated on July 1966. by William Edwin 4, Berrett, who was one of the roll the boys who helped grinding stone onto the church Halsteps on that long-agloween. Vern Bringhurst was master of ceremonies and the flag raising was by Union Boy Scouts under the direction of Harry Mudd. The East, .iust east of the First and Fourth Ward Chapel The flour mill was located at the bottom of this hill and was powered by water that came out of the East Jordan irrigation ditch, which came from Little Cottonwood Creek The mill race was built by Robert Pate and his two sons Thomas H. Smart and his wife. Mary Ann, lived in a the log house just across street from 1300 East on the corner of Creek Road. The first tannery and glue factory was a short distance east of the Smart home on the north side of Creek Road. Thomas H. Smart moved his tannery and glue factory out on the hill at 7800 South John and about 12th East. has a diploma his father received from Utah State Fair dated Oct. 2, 1889. for the best exhibit of home made oil and glue in Salt I ake County, signed by John R. Winder, president, and Heber W Wells, secretary, of the fair board. The flagpole stands adjac-- i ent to the World War 1 monument in the park and its base preserves one of the historical mementoes of the community.
