Show - - THI , " Thursday, Dec. 22, 1988 GRZEN SHEET Out My Window DEADLINES: r Milestone deadlines for jt Jan. 5th and Jan. 15th V Ethel Bradford " . - AY - All year long a small, Christmas box has set on a shelf in my dining room, and many a curious eye has scanned it, obviously wondering why I didn't put it away with the rest of the Holiday decorations. Mtellyou. The box was a gift from Dottieand Sterling Wright, and the following story came with it Christmas Is For Love "Christmas is for love, and I had not really believed it until a small elf-lik-e student, with' wide, innocent eyes and soft, rosy cheeks gave me a wondrous gift one Christmas. "Mark was an orphan who lived with his aunt, a bitter woman who was greatly . annoyed with the burden of caring for her dead sister's son. She never failed to remind Mark, and anyone who would listen, that if it hadnt been for her generosity, he would be a vagrant homeless waif. Still with all the scolding and chilliness at home, he was a' sweet and gentle, child. "I had not noticed him particularly until he began staying after class (at the risk of arousing his aunt's anger, I later found) to help me straighten up the classroom. He did this quietly and comfortably, not speaking much, but enjoying the solitude and peace of that quiet hour of the day. " "When we did talk, Mark spoke mostly of his Mother, and though he was quite small when she died, he remembered a kind, gentle, loving woman, who always spent time with him. "As Christmas drew nearer, however, Mark failed to stay after school each day. I had looked forward to his staying and when, as the days papers will be changed because of the holidays. If you wish your Milestone story, to appear in the Jan. 5th paper, we must have your informa passed, and he continued to scamper hurriedly from the room after class, I stopped him and asked why he no longer stayed to help me. "I told him how I had missed him, and his large gray eyes lit up eagerly as he replied, "Did you really miss me?" I explained how he had been my best helper. 7 am making you a surprise, " he I've had the same sort of quizzical looks from friends, but most of them know that I do pretty much as I please, and always have a reason for doing so, and so I get few questions, but. . . it and Dottie and Sterling did teach me a lesson. Christmas, especially, is for love. 4f s0- at the Ivans ward meetinghouse and a reception given at the home of the Bride's grandparents, Virgil - ' "& i ( ( OBITUARIES duties were Best man performed by Tony Trujillo while ushering were Danny, Michael and Craig DeVries, brothers of the groom. With that, he became embarrassed and dashed from the room, but he didn't stay after school again. "Finally came the last school Christmas. Mark crept slowly into the room late that afternoon with his hands behind his back. "I have your present," he said timidly when I looked up. "I hope you like it." He held out his hands and there, lying in his small palms was a tiny wooden box. "It's beautiful, Mark. Is there something inside it?" I asked as I opened the top. "Oh, you can't see what's in it," he replied, ' "and you can't touch it, or taste it, or feel it But . Mother always said it makes you feel good. It warms you on cold nights and makes you feel safe when you're all alone. "I gazed into the empty box and asked gently, "What is it, Mark, that will make me feel so good"? "It's love," he whispered softly, "and Mother always said it's best when you give it away," and with that he turned quietly and left the room. "So now I keep that small box, crudely made of scraps of wood on the piano of my room and smile when inquiring friends raise quizzical ', eyebrows when I explain to them that it is filled with love." same as always.
