Show 2 THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, Dec. 15, 1988 r Myths Cloud Knowledge Of Impaired Driving This week marks the National Safety Council's observance of National Drunk & Drugged Driving Awareness Week. The NSC points out that the average person's knowledge of alcohol and other drugs is clouded by myths, and misinformation. We share with our readers some ot those along a chart on breath alcohol content and its effects. The Green Sheet urges its readers to follow the NSC suggestion to designate a driver, know when to say when and calling a cab, parent or friend when impaired. Myth: Coffee, fresh air or a cold shower will help a person become sober. Fact: None of these remedies will decrease the effect of alcohol. The body must be allowed time, (one hour per average drink) to eliminate the alcohol. Myth: Alcohol is a stimulant. Fact: Alcohol is a depressant. It acts on the central nervous system like an anesthetic to lower or depress the activity of your brain. Myth: Like other food and drink, alcohol must be digested. Fact: Alcohol is absorbed directly into the bloodstream where it is carried to all parts of the body. ' Is it a case of "out of sight out of mind???" -- - Ramona King Scrooge hs I am writing in regard to recent reports that local elected officials have decided to scrap the light rail UTA is advocating. I think this is a wise choice. The West Valley Highway will assist more people in their transportation needs, and areas of the county that have waited years for completion of local roads deserve to be considered first There is another part of the story concerning UTA that needs to be addressed as well. The contract for bus drivers expires shortly. Everyone who uses UTA should be concerned over this round of contract talks. Management has asked drivers to give up insurance benefits and their guaranteed 40 hour week, among other actions. Personal prescription records of drivers have been searched for substances like Valium. Drivers with this type of drug on their list were taken off their buses and given a drug test and then sent out to drive again without the test results compiled. This invasion of privacy was uncalled for, in my opinion. Union leaders try to get information concerning the salary of John Pingree to determine if management was being fair with the workers. They could not get this information. If UTA receives public tax money, which it does, salaries of top officials should be public knowledge. They should have to play by the same rules as school districts who receive public funds. The negotiators tried to get the union to cut insurance benefits. When th receive the level of medical insurance that management receives, the discussion ended. Management claims that ridership is down, so drastic measures are needed. I talked to a student at Salt Lake Community College yesterday about her use of the bus. She told me she is constantly late to work because she has no other transportation but (1. Ihm Um1m..1...L.own unaerstanaing, but ifthe bus were not there, she would lose her job. The morale of the individual bus driver will determine how many riders heshe has. Your first ambassadors cannot promote more riders if they are being told they will not have a secure salary to finance household expenses, or are worried about having adequate medical coverage for themselves and their families. This is the only issue that is before the city council. This proposal comes after 2 years of public meetings which resulted in a master plan change for Our corner. Our proposal has nothing to do with dead carp, dog beatings, transients, increased vandalism, drug dealers, shoplifters fleeing to people s homes, garbage from dumpsters or the accusation that we are "holding out for the big bucks." Our conditional use permit is based on the e planner's planning commission's and the commercial advice concerning a neighborhood development We have followed the legal process to the letter of the law without "high priced lawyers at our fingertips." Mrs. Kennedy has questioned, "Who is running our city?" and she feels that it should be the citizens we agree but we are citizens of West Valley City too, and anyone who looks around that intersection will realize that we have no choice but to make our corner commercial.' The mistakes were made by the county, who made that intersection commercial in the first place, not by the Solomon family, and obviously Mrs. Baker doesn't know much about our attachment to the land - which has been our family's since 1890 or about the process land. of selling and V.
