The story of a colorful pioneer dentist who did dental work for LDS leaders and Brigham Young, has just been published by his Smith Joseph , Neibaur "Grandpa was a Pioneer" is a paperback book by Theda Lucille Bassett, which tells about the life of 55-pa- ' Alexander Neibaur, first Jewish convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints and the first dentist in Utah. The book emerged when Ms. Bassett decided to edit Grandpa Neibaur's journal, which is on file at the LDS Church's historical archives. She hadn't realized the tremendous she was task undertaking. She ended up doing the whole thing herself the story, the layout, typesetting on a computer and photos. She says this book is "a primer," for particularly Grandpa Neibaur's grandchildren, but also for many others interested in pioneer history. She is starting now to prepare for "the big one" which will be a larger, more scholarly journal. In her book Ms. Bassett tells about the Neibaur family's arduous 71 day journey from Liverpool, England to Nauvoo. She related Grandpa's experiences in Nauvoo, which included tutoring Joseph Smith in German and practicing dentistry in the home of Brigham Young, for whom he later made a set of "Sunday teeth." Neibaur's extensive personal journal, from which much of the text is taken, tells about his doing dental repair work for Joseph Smith, who had some of his teeth knocked out when he had been - -- x An tarred and feathered. advertisement in the Nauvoo Neighbor newspaper on Oct. 29, 1845, lists the dentist's rates as: "Teeth inserted, $2 each; teeth cleansed, 50 cents; filling a tooth, 50 cents; teeth extracted with great ease." Grandpa Neibaur was born in a fortress on the Rhine River called Ehrenbreitstein, and studied to become a Jewish rabbi before into dentistry. going After completing his dental studies, he settled in Preston, England, near a pub called the "Cock Pit" where cock races were held. As a convert to the LDS Church, he attended meetings held at that pub building, which was large enough to seat 800 people. Pictures of the area around his and home, other English illustrations supplied by the author add interest to the book. Bassett concludes her story with events in Utah after Neibaur arrived with Brigham Young's second company in 1848. He became the first dentist in the Territory of Deseret, which covered several western states. The book has some of Neibaur's poetry, which includes the words to the hymn "come Through Glorious Day of Promise," printed int the present LDS hymn book. "Grandpa Neibaur was a Pioneer" is available at Deseret Book and Sam Weller's book store. Price is $8.75. n, THE 581-635- Experienced Professionally Qualified Committed to Efficient Govornmcnt 6 .
