In making his announcement he said, The economy of the state is our number one problem. Our per capata income is one of the lowest in the nation. Over the past ten yean while the Republicans have had control of the Legislature we have seen a steady decline in jobs mat pay a good liveable wage. This affects all Utahns because when people do not have money to spend, they cut out of their daily living many things professional people depend on such as medical, dental, insurance. They cut back on food and housing. This in turn cuts the tax base and the government agencies suffer. "Over the past ten yean we have seen a decline in jobs especially the better paying jobs. "The meat processing industry is almost nonexistent. All large packers except Miller Meat in Hyrum is gone. This affects the cattle ranchers as most of their buyers now are from out of state. We all know of the steel, copper, coal and oil industry and how they have closed, Then when they did reopen it was with less jobs and pay cuts. "We saw the raising of the great Salt Lake arid did nothing until it had washed the dykes of Amax Magnesium, shutting down their plant and putting many out of work. They have yet to come back to the level they were. "We saw problems in areospace yet I saw no support from the state of Utah for Thiokol when we all knew the risk involved every time there was a rocket launched. "Now we stand to lose much in Utah if Thiokol loses the NASSA contract. Thiokol and Hercules have been good employers in Utah, good for Utah and Utahns. "The Federal government is also a good employer in Utah, We have the military, Tooele, Hill Air Force Base, Internal Revenue in ' served as assistant to the Inspector General for Utah VRW, these have been threatened. "The list goes . on and the as a cub master and as president Western Boys working field narrows.
