Show THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, November 12, 1987 M o s fl I Kristy Ann Whitworth Out My Window Weds Rick Charles Searle Ethel Bradford Rick Charles Searle and Kristy became husband and wife in a double-rin- g ceremony performed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on November 6. Ann Whitworth wanted to know where they ended up and how they were doing, so letters were sent back and forth. Just like thousands of others. anyone who genealogy even to the Now, has even dabbled in least degree knows two things: That many people changed their names when emigrating to the United States, and; 1. 2. That Scandinavian people are famous for changing their names each generation. I don't know if they still follow the old custom, but, at one time, a young lad, born to a man named Carl, grew up to become Carl's son, or Carlson. Peter's son became Peterson; Hans' son became Hanson, and so on and on. That custom began year's ago in a more simple, less mobile world. When a child was born . . . the people would say, "Oh, that's John's son," the same as today, but 'back then', it stuck and became the boy's surname. So. . . name changes were both quite common and very acceptable. All of which gets around to why my natal name could ha ve been Box instead of the very Swedish name of Ohlin. Grandpa and Grandma Ohlin decided to come to America at the time when all converts to the LDS church were being encouraged to get to Salt Lake as soon as they c'il'i, - .ftiy A wedding breakfast was held at the Jordan Queen and a reception given at the Granger West First ward. But here's where the 'funny' part of it entered in and why I almost became Ethel Box!! Grandpa didn't buy a home immediately (after all, first things came first with a new language, getting work, etc., etc.) and so, until a permanent place was found they used a Post Office box for their address. My birth name, as you may know, was Ethel Ohlin. It was almost Ethel Box. s. on as..... n The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean L. Whitworth, West Valley City, and is a graduate of Granger high. , He rented one and then, his official address was "P.O. BOX" Salt Lake, Tersuch-and-suc- h, Nothing funny or even unusual there, except . . Grandpa 's name just happened to be Peter Ohlin, and, his friends in Sweden, very familiar with name changes, decided he had become, as a new U.S. citizen, Peter Ohlin (P.O.) Box. after much thought, work and tears, they left their good home in Eskalstuna, Sweden and began the then long trek to this valley. ( ; J ) s. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Searle, West Valley City, and is a graudate of Granger high. He has filled an LDS mission to Boston, and is attending Salt Lake Community College where he is studying physical therapy. Lisa Whitworth was maid of honor, and other attendants were Cassie Birtcher and Kathy Goates. And, as I heard it from my Dad, much mail went back and forth before the mix-u- p was explained and the Scandina vian branch of the fami- ly understood that there had been no name change, but just an odd circumstance that . . . while P.O. were Grandpa's initials . . . they also stood for Post Office Box here in the U.S. The flower girl was Malissa Beauchamp. Lee Ann Guymon and Mindy Kettle attended the guest book. Grandpa and Grandma most certainly had more important things on their mind at that time than 'righting' a bit of name confusion, but slowly the joke of Peter Ohlin Box became an amusing part of the family's folklore. Sergeant Troy E. Mason Filling responsibilities of best man were Bryan Inkley and Darrin Dixon, and ushers were Troy and Robert Whitworth. In time, the women of the family took on the names of their husbands; one branch dropped the 'W and became Olin, and 'my' branch? Well, I still smile when I think how easily my name could have become Box and I'd never have known the difference. Sergeant Troy E. Mason, son of Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi.
