J. Dale Christensen has been named prinHartland cipal for the newly-buielementary school that will open this fall at 1451 W. 7000 South. Dr. Christensen served as principal of Westvale elementary for the past 10 years and previous to that was principal of Edgemont elementary in Sandy. He taught school for two years in Jordan District and also in Eugene, Ore. for three years. He earned his masters degree from the University of Oregon and an education specialist degree from the University of Utah. He received his doctor of education degree in public school administration from BYU in 1983. Along with Dr. Christensen's transfer from Westvale to Hartland elementary, will come the special ed cluster class program. Special ed teachers and students previously at- tending Westvale elementary will now be attending Hartland. "We will be on a traditional schedule this year," noted Dr. is being Christensen. "Year-roun-d planned for the future. The school was built for a capacity of 840 students. The enrollment this year will be approximately 600 students." He added, "It's going to be a year of organization. We will be piloting a built-i- n computer lab program for Jordan District here that will house 20 computers. There's going to be a lot of inservice training for teachers and students. "I have a strong desire to work closely with the community. One of my objectives is to unify neighbors and create a community type of atmosphere. I want people to feel this truly is their neighborhood school," he remarked. Parents and children are being invited to attend an open house at the school on Aug. 27 from 4 p.m. so that the children can become familiar with the school and also meet their new teachers, explained Dr. Christensen. Dr. Christensen and his wife Linda, a kindergarten teacher, are the proud parents of seven children: Brian, a student at BYU; Heidi, a student at Weber State; Jason, a student at Granger high; Cathy, a student at Valley junior high; Jared and Wendy, students at Robert Frost elementary and Becky, a preschooler. "We're kind of a homebound family, he stated. "We raise farm animals; cows, sheep, chickens, ducks, rabbits, and a cat and a dog." His family also grows a very large garden each year, "on one third of an acre." Christensen At The Helm . fun 2.2 mile runwalk race will be held Friday morning beginning at 7:00 a.m. Parents, community members, and students are being invited to participate. A $5.00 entry fee per person is required for the race to cover the cost of a Junior Jaguar for all contestants, explained Lori Lake, spokeswoman. The race is being sponsored by the Wasatch Road Runners Association. The runners will run on roads adjacent to the school. West Jordan police will monitor the race to ensure the safety of all participants. Ribbons will be awarded to the A I MOW reap WEST JORDAN. Brenda Lee Hales has been announced as the new principal at Columbia elementary, replacing D. Owen Harrison, former principal, who now serves as the North Area Director for the Jordan School District. Ms. Hales was born in Provo, Utah and grew up in Salt Lake City. She graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in elementary education and taught school at East Sandy and Brookwood elementaries. 4 parents will adjourn to the classrooms to meet teachers and receive instruction regarding curriculum.
