Show 5 City Rep ' Queen' Wins In "The Snow Queen," Salt Lake Repertory's Christmas presentation, has been named the SALT LAKE. ng winner of the Unpublished Project for 1986-8UPRP is sponsored by the American Association of Theatre for Youth. The play will be read at the 1 9 87 national convention of the association, which will be held in Chicago Aug. Joanne M. Parker , artistic director for City Rep, and Madelyn Larsen wrote the play. Together the two have several other pieces. Selection of "The Snow Queen" as a finalist is "highly unusual" since the authors had never before submitted plays in the project competition, according to the chairman of UPRP, Lou Furman. "Normally it takes two or three submissions to develop finalist expertise," he said. Furman said selection of this peice will ensure recognition of it as a theater piece for children. Then the abuser turns that relationship around, telling the child that it's pay-bac- k time, she continues. Sometimes children will go for years giving signals there is something wrong, but no one picks it up. She gives some of the warning signs that parents can look for. These are usually changes in behavior. They include a decline in grades, aggressive behavior, withdrawal, nightmares, bed wetting or accidents in clothing, unusually fearful of being left alone, afraid of the dark, won't sleep in own bed, reverting to younger behavior, wanting to be cuddled and treated like a baby, can't sit still, unable to concentrate. Children who are victims of sexual abuse need therapy by specially trained sexual abuse therapist, play therapists, who are trained to help the children work through feelings, she says. She emphasizes this abuse is not a moral issue for the child; they have done nothing wrong. Parents need to educate their children and themselves. Children need to know they have choices and can say no. She adds listening and improving the children's are important. Parents should also remember that anyone could be an abuser; if something doesn't seem right, it just might not be. Jeffery points out that friends often know when a friend is being abused. They should know it's okay to tell. They can call the Division of Family Services of the Police Department and report the problem anonymously, giving enough information that the victim can be found, he says. How do they avoid becoming burned out after dealing with this day after day? Smalley says she looks for the positives and doesn't dwell on the negatives - what she can do. "If I can't prosecute this creep, at least I got the kid into therapy." Their rewards come when a victim or family thanks them for helping. Knowing a child gets the counseling and help needed, helps her keep coming back after seven years in Sandy's Police Department. School Board Continued from page 1 board would have to discuss the waiver issue to see it would provide the funds to cover those fees. The superintendent said the proposal would be brought back as an action item on June 9. Assistant Superintendent Marlin Fairbourne walked board members through a revised version of the district middle school brochure. The brochure, which the district would like to distribute to students and patrons in the fall, includes information on the program of studies in seventh, eighth and ninth grade; required credits, grading credits, fees, testing and activities. self-estee- Answer II fy rnirlE L i F Puzzle. 13111 l 10 111 UI H till rils Mtjt TJ Hir " jTT o" 1 lE iT 1 UiEEII i ilMi jito 1 5lo 5L i. i nk W a n Is lo I. o To P.
