So, Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scottie and the rest of the faithful crew travel back in time to 1986 in order to locate and transport two of the whales into the future. Naturally they have other problems to deal with and are separated into teams in order to accomplish their missions which are complicated by not being familiar with the styles and customs of 1986, making them seem like fish by Mark Cartwright & Kelli Lidell Green Sheet Entertainment Critics Seen On The Screen Dept: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is certifiably the best of all the Star Trek films to date and terrific entertainment from start to finish. Directed by Leonard Nimoy and starring William Shatner, Nimoy, De Forest Kelly, James Doohan, George Takei and Nichelle Nichols, the entire crew is back to undertake an adventure, in order to save the earth of the future. A space probe has been raising havoc with the earth's atmospheric condi the megabucks, the cast knew that in order to give the audience what they wanted, some changes were necessary, which is when Paramount signed Nimoy to direct and star in the third film. Who else, but a member of the cast having gone through three years on television and two feature films, would understand what was needed? Nimoy immediately set the focus on the characters' interaction, their likes, dislikes, habits and even the petty bickering which made them a cohesive unit, a family that cared about each other and made the viewer care about them. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Homeis not just for Trekkies. If you are not a Star Trek fan, we strongly suggest you see this film at either Century 5 Theatres (in 70mm and Dolby sound) or Mann Theatres (in 35mm and stereo). It's two hours of sheer out of water (we know, it's a bad pun). Nimoy, who not only directs but also contributed to the screenplay, allows the infusion of humor here and there while keeping the cast in character and the humor germane to the relevance of the scene. When the first two Star Trek films were released, we were hardly impressed. The scripters and directors had gotten away from the essence of what made Star Trek work in the first place, and sacraficed it to an over loaded array of special effects and tepid dialogue. While Paramount was hauling in entertainment which will get you involved and leave you feeling that ; you got your money's worth. Solarbabies is a film set in the future where children are taken from their parents and placed in an "orphanage" where they are taught to work within the new order, which appears to have come about from some sort of nuclear disaster as there are no thunder clouds and no rain. Naturally, those who administer the new order, the protectorate, are quite full of themselves and abuse their power and position. Imagine, if you will, a teen-ag- e Mad Max group on roller skates searching for a mystical sphere which has been stolen from them and you'll have some idea of the plot of Solarbabies, which really is an adventure film worth seeing. Judging by the advertising campaign, you'd never guess that this film had theme, solid and good special effects. Whoever put the ad campaign together should be slapped for the crime of omission. We've seen better ads put together by novices in the ad biz, so MGM, the distributer of this Brooksfilm presentation, should be ashamed. It's worth seeing. Don Bluth and several other an action-adventu- re cast dissatisfied former Disney animators jumped ship and joined forces with Stephen Speilberg to An American Tail starring Fievel, a mouse who immigrates to America. Reams have already been written about this marvelous family film which marks the return to terrific animation. The plot will make you laugh, cry and just generally feel glad that you saw it.
