Show The Sact ilakb telegram. MONDAY EVENING, JANUARY 25, 1904. .1 FAY v.f LAN TO WALL IN rATCtkC AtATTMlC AT TATD ESTAOUSHED U304 George Dcrr, Excursion Agent for Resort, Does Not Believe in Moving the Pavilion. 005-)eSLOOKS FOR A r i SEASON. RECORD-BREAKIN- G The resort is not losing its popularity in any sense of the ivord, as last year we carried more persons than ever before. It was our record year, but I believe that it will be eclipsed by 1904, with lta hourly service and 23 cent" rate. The heavy snowfall promises a good rise in the level of the water, all of which will tend to maintain the popularity of the resort. GEORGE DERR TO THE TELEGRAM. George Derr. excursion agent for the Ealtair Beach company, favors the plan advocated by Manager Langford to erect a restraining wall around the great pavilion, for the purpose of keeping the water at a sufficient depth to afford good bathing, as a means to preserve the resort. "The Saltair company," he said to The Telegram, "is a corporation that has not $1,000,000 to spend on improve-a ments. It has been suggested that great basin be dredged about the pavilion. "Such a thing would be impossible find it could not be made a success because of the shifting of the sands. Such a basin, if dredgeu, would fill in almost before the work were finished. "I believe the plan to build a wall around the pavilion and pump the water in, would be best. "The pavilion cannot be moved it would cost an enormous sum. The is set on r000 great piles sunk into the sand, which has hardened and eemeted about them. Each one of these would have to be steamed out and the , la ?k would be an enormous one. fL'oving "Walk Not Feasible. "There should, however, be a differ ent plan to convey the bathers to the water than bv the rafts. A moveable walk like the one at Coney Island not would be a good thing, but it would do here. The water is extremely hef-v- y and the storms so severe that such aa rnntrivancfl would be wrecked in short time and broken up Into klndlln wood and scran iron. "The management showed consider able enterprise in its improvements last year, and should be given due credit for it. The managers are always consider ing new plang for the coming season to make the resort more ana more aurac tive. "Many persons complain of walking cut to the water t bathe. I am toia, however, that on the Atlantic seaboard.to in those resorts, the bathers have walk equally far to reach the water. If such is the case Salt Lakers should not complain. "An effort will be made to put on a ono-hoservice for all of next season. Getting that service, I be reve the resort will do the business. The two hours service given last sea son was unsatisfactory alike to our ereatest patrons, the home people, and to our other friends, the tourists. "Next summer's rate will be 25 cents, ns we found out last year that tne u cent rate was prohibitive, and the man ngement lost money on the experi-me- n t." pa-vili- an NEW si JW 1 held !
