A.,-- The Charleston News and Courier in discussing the need of white immigration into South Carolina Temple. V.) Another Wartime Hero Dies in Poverty. When Edward Ii. Black died in Philadelphia on Sunday the Associated Tress sent out a four line iteir describing Black as the oldest engineer in service of the Pennsylvania Railroad company, lint Black enjoyed a higher distinction which the Associated Press forgot to mention. Black was a hero who earned his title as the man who saved President Lincoln during the most stirring period of the Nation's history. The incident that brought him fame was his safe piloting" of Lincoln from Ilarrisburg so he could later get to Washington via Philadelphia, while plotters against ihe President's life awaited his passage through Baltimore. It was at the time when the feeling between the North and the South ran high. Lincoln wanted to go to Washington, with his family to be inaugurated in 1SG1. Engineer Black was intrusted with the train that took the President to Ilarrisburg on February 22nd. Instead of proceeding direc t from there to Washington, Lincoln drove outside the city and took a train back to Philadelphia, piloted by night by Engineer Black. They entered Philadelphia at Thirtieth and Market streets, whence the President was driven to Broad and Prime streets and from there the President started for Washington. i (HI rpt 82 Entered at the PostoGce at Salt Lake City, Utah, aa Matter. 1. ;AMTA B TO MAIL SUBSCRIBERS The date when your subscription expires is on the address label of each paper, the change cf 'which to a subsequent date becomes a receipt for remittance. The Supreme court of Indiana not long ago de clared that so long as a street remains no part of it can be occupied (or private uses, and that there exists no power in any legislative or executive body to grant permission to that end. The act is in itself nw. null and void. There exists authority under due forms to close a street or alley altogether, but so long as either re mains dedicated to public uses it is the jMple's, and no authority exists to give or take it for private uses. The people should insist on the whole possession of CP their property, and the building inspector can help them. hou'.d be addressed pertalnlr.gr to thi Editrr of the Salt Lake Telegram. RsJectel MS 3. cannot be returned unless postage is sent for TUESDAY KYENI.NO, DKCKMIIER says: "Increased white population is of vital importance to South Carolina. Everybody is agreed uion that point." The editorial goes on to say that it will require thousands of white settlers to overbalance the large negro population of the State and solve the race problem. And here is what the News and Courier means by "solving the race problem": "There is one way to save it and the only one way and that is to increase the white population to such an extent that the negro will And it imperative for him to move out ami move on.'' It is this IMPERATIVE spirit which is now keeping South Carolina in the back number list. That was the spirit of Tillman's settlement with Gonzales. A gun etfected the adjustment. The same spirit is shown in the statement that the negro must be forced to "move out and move on." White men. are not to be attracted to a State where the spirit of lawlessness reigns, where assas sination is practiced. The News and Courier must change its. line of argument and the South Camlinans must lose that IMPERATIVE spirit before they can hope to turn the tide of white immigration into their State. The white American is a lover of law and order. - ft "THE CHAMELEON t H .X X By JAMES WEBER LINN pyriht. 14. WfO t-- y rM:ar jr. A C t.tt t - FrAnH Tlf ilf-r1- tin t fx'lor.. hi M 1 1 ji J '!
