McClosIffty of this city, merly manager of the Louisville Baseball club in the old National league days, returned home yesterdaj after an absence of six months spent on the Pacific coast, says the Louisville Courier-Journa- l. Manager McCloakey made a success of his venture and he returned here yesterday a baseball magnate, having purchased the Salt Lake franchise. Salt Lake, by the way, proved last season that it was one-o- the best paying baseball" towns in the West. It. was also said ycaturctay that Mana- ger McCloskey had been offered the position of manager of the St. Louis National league team. lie would neither confirm nor deny this yesterday, but it is known that, he stopped over in St. Louis on his vny East, and had a long conference with Stanley Itobison tnd Frank de Haas Robison, the owners of the St. Louis club. Of the war on the coast, in which McCloskey was interested, the Sporting Life says: "McCloskey was dispatched to Portland to stop the break. This he was unable to do, but he succeeded in getting local capital to back a team ir the P. N. L. Then the idea was proposed for an invasion of California. "It has always been claimed that W. V. Garrett, former owner of the Spokane team, first suggested the plan. All of the4 other magnates were about the pl'in, and .McCloskey and Lucas were dispatched to California. How they succeeded in interesting local capital in the plan is an old story. The lirst break in the P. N. L. came when the1 Portland men ran out of money and the The league had to assist the team. team never drew, as its grounds were across the river from the town, and local sympathy was with Marshall. A meeting was he'd in Spokane, and the directors agreed to buy out the Portland coast team if possible. Former Manager Doolc-- of the Montreal team, in the Eastern ieague, was selected for the task, .pooley went to Portland and was to either buy t:ie opposition team or to merge it with the other. He found this f -- Impossible, as the tock of the Coast League team was widely scattered. The league got thed of paying the Portland assessments and had the franchise transferred to Fait Lake. Helena dropped out of the league because it had never made any money nnd the other teams were insUt'ng on the Helen team putting up'a guarantee for every home game. Tacoma dropped out be cause of internal dUsensions and trouble that they had with President Lucas. "It looks at present as though the circuit of the 1. T. L. would next year be composed of the following ba.l towns: Portland, Tncoma. Seattle, Spokane, Butte and Salt Lake. A move is on foot to give the backers of the Seattle outlaw franchise the Tacoma franchise. Salt Lake is proving cce of the best ball towns in the league. McCloskey has bought the franchise and hf-- succeeded n getting prominent hii.il business men to back the club." n! !.
