Players 1 BRYAN REQUIRED TO TELL SEALED LETTER MYSTERY Cannot Qualify as Executor of Estate Which Gives Mm Large Sura for accorded him and his The usual order was reversed last night, Mr. James appearing in the heroic role, while Mr. i Warde assumed the vilco-st- ar i lain's part. As the Alexander, Mr. James scored a complete triumph, while none the less pronounced was Mr. Warde's success as Perdlccas, the scheming prime minister, who by' deceit and. treachery finally accomplished the death of Alexander and his own exaltation. The incidental for the most part are heroic, but the dramatists have woven a love story into Alexander's life, and have made a poraewhat strained and improbable character of Roxanna, an Egyptian girl, who in male attire follows Alexander's army so as to be near her lord, and In so doing becomes a" sort of female detective in disguise. The part, however, is well portrayed by Miss; Margaret Bonure. The other leading female character, th- -t of of Cleopatra, widow ' King Philip, a' weak, but designing woman, is capably handled by Miss Engel Sumner. Norman Hackett as the impulsive, devoted Clitus, has a role well suited to him. The scenic equipment comprises six massive stage pictures. The first is the palace of King Phillip, after who?? apaseination Alexander succeeds to the throne: then the Egyptian Temple of Ammon. where the sorceries of the high priests are exposed. This is folio ved by the tent of Perdieca?, and brings the third set to a close. The fourth act showy the mountain tops above the clouds, where Alexander imend agines he has leached thescene of the world It is in this that the inventive geniusart-of f.age mechanic and scenic ist has been most brilliantly illustrated. The fifth act shows The sicxe of the town of Mallia. where Alexander fought one of his ereatest battles. The last net is a scene of royal splendor, a banquet tent in where Alexander, rurfpited wjth conquest and bat-t- l. if bidding farewell to his r;en?rals. and pictures the tragic chVr.ax to the play, where, ti oush villainy is triumphant, A defeat, .is made glorious. hs'-g- f cf bill will be offered sM the Wednesday matinee andon which occaThursday v.lght.Caesar" will be sion "Julius presented. Bennett, a tea merchant of New York, who resided in thia city and at the time of his death was supposed to be a millionaire. The mysterious bequest was made, according to the belief of Mr. Bryan's friends, to enable him to promote his economic theories either perFonally or through a chair he might found in some university or college with the money. By ,he will of Mr. Bennett, which it U said was drawn by Mr. Bryan himself, the $"0,000 is left in trust to the widow, who is to dispose of the money in ac cordance with the terms of a mysterious letter mentioned in the will, but so far withheld from the court in which the will was offered for probate. Mr. Bryan was present to qualify as an executor, as the will direc tr, but both he and Mrs. Bennett, the widow, refused to present the letter or tell where it was. Judge Cleveland, before whom the case came up. decided after reading the will that he must have the letter mentioned therein. If properly signed and sealed it might be a codicil and as such should bo produced in court. He could not ascertain cither from Mr. Bryan or Mis. Bennett what relation the letter bore to the will, so he postponed the case till he could get the facts. Mr. Bennett was a member of the firm of Bennett.
