There is a world of fiction in that old saying about misery following in the wake of riches. The news of the day brings a story from Chicago which wli i ii in ' f Vi ii o l- J i - rl' Vi ! i i i i i i iv 1903. The local sea of labor is unrufiled. True there have bNin sonic little blow-upduring the summer, but nothing approaching the seriousness of a storm. And now that labor conditions are virtuallv settled let them remain so. Let employer and employees be honest to each other. Let neither demand too much nor be unwilling to concede too little. Iet's dwell together in harmony. There arc splendid citizens on the muster roll of the local labor organizations. True, they may not roll in wealth, may not be listed among the cits big taxpayers, but they are enterprising, intelligent, i()OD citizens, capable of tilling with credit positions which some of Salt Lake's heavy taxpayers would do well to dodge. That is an ''xceetiinglv- interest in?; piece of news that comes from Chicago that several of the great publishing concerns that will move away because the labor troubles have made their business unprofitable. Hand, McNally & Co., employing more than 1000 people, are preparing to move their two big plants. For some time the company has had several sites under contemplation, one in Waukegau meeting with most favor. Officials of the company assert it is impossible to maintain a plant like the concern in Chicago and meet the demands of the unions and compete with the jobbing trade. The decision of the big map publishing company fol- - y Agamemnon was spending his eleventh year before Troy. "And why," urged his Generals, "don't you take a little trip? You know it'a only forty miles to Schenectady." "Yes." he muttered grimly, "but it is only two eteps to Pari3." Furthermore, he must have noticed we let the citizen speak for themselves, and that we did not syeak for them. The Telegram published these interviews because it knew thevj would be widelv read. It was nothing new in journalism, but one of the commonest of practices nowadays in independent newspaper offices. We are sorry for our friend, the scriber, and we suppose we must permit him to go on in his blind wray and learn only one side of things and subscribe to a paper which prints only views of those of his own way of thinking. There is possibly such a paper, though that kind is getting to be as scarce as hen's teeth in modern journalism. As for The Telegram it will go right straight on being a newspaper, with it. columns open for the expression of opinion by the richest or the poorest. This hates our local legislative body and can't stand to read anything good about it, even though this paper does not: indorse the words of the party interviewed. The other day we had a man stop his paper because we gave the racing news. Still another day another e man stopped his subscription because we did not given enough racing news. Sometime ago we were raked over the coals because we printed news about Prince Henry. Again we got into hot water for giving the sayings of Sir Thomas auent the yacht race. It is hardly necessary to comment on these instances of citizenship. They contain a whole sermon in themselves. There are some individuals who do not want a newspaper to give the news, but onlv to reflect their own views. Thev don't want to be jarred from their biases.
