Signs of returning intelligence are more often manifest and there are frequently occasions when she indicates that she understands the conversation of other members of the family. Whether or not the loving struggle which the father, mother and sister are making for Bessie's life shall prove successful, seems as hard a problem to answer as it was a month ago. Commons was In committee on the susar convention bill today a long discussion 5. arose as to whether the importation of bounty-fe- d sugar should be prohibited or countervailing- duties should be Imposed. Many of the Liberal members referred to the American imports, which, although now insignificant, might increase If thj of sugar rose. It was pointed Out price tha the Drohlbltinn of suenr from thn United States would be a violation of the most favored nation clause, and stress was laid by the opposition on tho same question, as it might affect Argun-ti- n a. Gerald Balfour, president of the Board of Trade, in replying to critics, said that if it seemed likely that a largre supply would be cut off by the prohibition, the Government Would consider the advisability of applying countervail iner duties. 4- - pears. at the To-li- ce j court yesterday afternoon which, if correct, uncovers ihe work of a clever woman grafter who fleeces the members of her own sex. Wrappers, X CLER Thanks to the aid of charitable Salt Lakers, the Knechts are now able to give Bessie the care and treatment that has benefited her so much that there is some hope of saving her life. They have left the poor little hut on the t, desolate, barren soil northwest of the Hot Springs, and are now comfortably located in a neat brick cottage near. Third South and Eighth West streets. This modest home, for which they pay $8 per month, is a palace compared with their former residence. The treatment of massage, skin foods, beef tea, malted milk and like remedies, during the use of which Bessie first showed signs of marked improvement, is still patiently and steadily continued, although it i?now administered by the mother, a disagreement having arisen between Mrs. Knecht and the man who first began to apply the remedies that proved helpful. How the Money Was Spent. A representative of The Telegram visited the Knecht home todav and discussed fully with Mr. and Mrs. Knecht the question of the expenditure of the money raised by citizens of Salt Lake for the sick girl. Unsolicited, the father and mother made the statement that they had been accused of spending this fund sellishlv and without regard for their afflicted daughter's interest. The devotion with which the mother, herself in poor health, has cared for Jessie since her removal from the hospital is the best answer that could possibly be made to this charge. But believing that the public has a right to know what disposition is being made of the fund. The Telegram requested Mr. Knecht to make an itemized statement of expenditures to date, as nearly as might be done. To this he unhesitatingly consented and the statement printed above. submitted Anna Knecht, Bessie's d sister, told The Telegram man that durpast year her father's earnings ing the had a veraged not to exceed $4 per week For the shack in which thev lived a rental of $3 per month was paid. Besides Bessie, there are three children to be provided for. Mr. Knecht desires The Telegram to announce that no one is, with his approval, collecting funds for his afflicted daughter, and says that it has eom- - to his knowledge that several persons claiming to collect money for her have deceived the public. big-heart- 4-- 13.7" ,.
