Show The Saet Lake Telegram U II WRAILROADI . WHY RAILROADS HAVE ISSUED ORDER. In explanation of the action taken by the road, Ira C. Tuttle, v agent of the Short Line, said today: "The traffic on the two roads has become too heavy to allow time to disinfect the cars. The demand for them is so great that, we are required llve-.ctic- 0 k 00 0 to keep them on the move all the time and to have a great number of them tied up being fumigated greatly inconveniences us and delays traffic over the entire system. The cost of cleaning the cars annually amounts to a great sum and this expense coupled with the lcsnes In valuable time is so great that there is no profit in handling carded pheep. Therefore both roads have decided to make a firm stand for clean bills of health and in the future the sheepmen who desire to ship over the Short Line or the Union Pacific will have to comply with the law governing scabby sheep and dip them twice, thereby securing a clean bill of health. , 0 5i I 0 0 i f TOR AMUSEMENT, f 4- - 44- - in- - The Evening Telegram will form ycu on all sports, resorts and theaters. Several children were injured last nipht, one probably fatally, by a runaway horse which was maddened at the txplosion of set off by Pevery enthusiasts, who were raising a banner at Twenty-eight- h street and Eighth "venue. The former Police Chiefs neighbors in that section had turned out in great numbers; to help raise a banner, sotting forth his claims as candidate for the Mayoralty. Fireworks were plentiful, and the excitement was at its height, when a passing cab horse took fright at the explosion of a bomb. The animal dashed wildly throutrh the crowd and upon the sidewalk where many children stood. They were knocked in all directions and three fell, seriously injured. Most of the others received minor hurts. The accident put an effective check on the ceremonies. 1 arSety isow. Utah t. 00000 Short Line and Union Pacific Companies Have Stirred Up Sheepmen 0 by Requiring Clean Bills of Health. The sheepmen of Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana are greatly excited over a rule recently made by the Oregon Short Line and the Union Pacific, governing the transportation of sheep. Both companies have announced that In the future they will refuse to carry over their road's, consignments of sheep not accompanied by a clear bill of health from the United States Bureau of Animal Industry. This decision on the part of the railroads is a direct resulc of the prevalence of a disease known as "scabies" or "sheep scab" in the flocks all through this Western country. The United States Department of Agriculture, of which the Bureau of Animal Industry is a branch, has passed certain laws governing interstate traffic in sheep, which are infected with the as scabies. parasite Attacks Both Sheep and Cattle. This parasite attacks sheep as a rule, although there is a similar one which attacks cattle and horses. The hair or wool commences to fall from the affected animal and an irritation is set up on the skin. The animal bites and scratches itself and becoming worn out and thin from the continued aggravation, often dies. The Department of Agriculture, for a number of years, has been attempting to stamp out thi3 disease which annually causes a, loss of millions of dollars to the sheepmen. The method adopted for treating the sheep is known as dipping. A strong solution of lime, sulphur and water is made and in this the sheep are dipped and allowed to remain in the solution tor from two to three minutes. A law made by the department designates all localities in which the disease is known to exist as infected and holds all sheep in such a locality to have been exposed to the contagion. Another law prohibits the shipping of exposed sheep from one State to another unless they are dipped before they are loaded, except for immediate slaughter. Affected sheep cannot lawfully be moved unless they have been dipped at least; once. In either case, whether they are affected or merely exposed, the car in which they are loaded must be marked "scabby sheep." Still another law provides that every car which has been used to transport scabby sheep as well as the yards where the animals were handled must be thoroughly cleansed and disinfected with a solution of carbolic acid and lime. Two Dippings Effect Cure. A. second dipping ten days after the first is considered by the Government to be suffifneient to cure the disease and the sheep so treated are given a clean bill of health. The expense of disinfecting the cars and the loss of the time required for this purpose prompted the two roads to take this stand againL "scabby sheep." What this action on the part of the railroads means to the sheepmen can be readily understood when it is explained that Utah and Wyoming as well as certain portions of Idaho are under quarantine and no sheep shipped from those localities are given a clean bill of health until they have been dipped twice. n! known, ynj If you want your ant d.
