At the other end of the table, it appears that the proportion of Protestant families with but one or two children is larger than that of the Hebrew families with one or two children. Among the Protestant communions there ate seVeral whow average of children is higher than the Koman Catholic .average, notably the Episcopalian and Presbyterian, but, excepting the Free Methodists, there is not a single Protestant communion in which the average is as high as the Hebrew." Dr. Laidlaw contends that the same condition prevails throughout the whole country. It is now up to the members of other churches to produce their birth records and prove that Dr. Laidlaw's figures are inaccurate. ; THE PEOPLE'S NEWSPAPER. SATURDAY EVENING, AUGUST 1, 1903. JLegally Innocent but Morally Guilty . "We are daily seeing the destruction of human life through the unwillingness of mothers to nurse : their young children. It is nothing short of race murder, and can be compared only with the ravages wrought by race suicide." In this forcible language pr. William 0. Woodward, health officer of the dis-- I trict, referred to the enormous mortality now pre-- ' vailing among infants in Washington, D. C. This is a terrible arraignment, but there is much of truth iu it. In the national capital, especially, many ' mothers sacrifice their babies on the altar of so- i'ety- - Jn ne week just ended more than one fifth ! of all deaths in the district occurred among children less than 2 years of age. Of the infants who sue- enmbed last week, four were nursed by their mothers, three on cows milk alone and thirteen on con- densed milk. "Even under the very best conditions' savs Dr. Woodward, '"condensed milk is an unsatis-factorsubstitute for the proper food. It is administered to the unfortunate little ones chielly through Abe desire of the mothers to avoid giving the right nourishment. Behind the mere announcement that a child had died of diarrheal trouble there can generally be found another and more interesting cause. In the investigation of most cases we have discovered that the baby's demise has been directly or due to improper attention on the part of the parents. There is no excuse for a wife not to know how to nurse her young children, and it is astonishing to believe that a mother will not, if she can. There is a possible excuse for those who can not, on account of poverty. A great remedy for the terrible condition would be the establishment of more dav nurseries, where mothers could leave their little s ones while at work' The society woman who her babe in order to dance and make merry is not legally responsible should her child die as a result of a diet of prepared foods, but morally her guilt is great. The deaths of those thirteen little The regrettable fact that so many Palt Lake bovs have deserted from the navy should not be accepted as an indication that Utah boys are lacking in stamina, loyalty and pluck. The majority of the young men born in this State should have inherited pluck and stamina to a marked degree, when we consider the privation and hardship endured by their ancestors, the men and women who settled Utah. Put some sound advice to the Utah bov who desires to succeed in business is always of value, especially at this time. Here is the advice of W. S. MeCorniek, a successful banker and capitalist, given to the loung Ltahn through The Telegram: Close strict attention to busi application and uess, and for young men the consideration that their word is as good as any bond, will win success. I do not mean that a young man, or any other man for that matter, should stop with the consideration of his word being as good as his bond', but he should in every instance make it so. I think the best method of attaining the confidence of the people is for a man's word to be kept as good as a bond. Without the confidence of the people earned and kept, a man cannot expect to succeed. Sterling honesty, close application and mastery of details of business will win success where other methods will almost invariably fail to win and keep permanent success and the regard of associates.' This advice means something, coming from such a business man as Mr. McCornick. It may prove the secret of the success in life of many Inns who read and follow it. The Federation, which is the quarterly organ of the federation, says: "That religion may have directly to do with the question of race suicide' has been illustrated by the sociological studies of the federation.
