A thrilled the hardened spectators in a Philadelphia court last week. Kichard Graham, a young man who had faced the bar of justice many times to receive punishment, stood before the court, arraigned on a charge of theft. The case against him was strong, but there was no sign of contrition, worry or fear in the prisoner's demeanor. At fie Judge's stern "Stand up," Graham arose with defiance and bravado in his bearing. It was the next words of the court that worked the miracle. "Your mother is dead' said the Judge, it was no longer a criminal that stood up, but a brokenhearted,, trembling, weeping prodigal son. The St. Louis fair will be opened on the date set. President David R. Francis gives his word for that. There will be no such vexing delays as those which attended the opening of the World's fair in Chicago. Mr. Francis has been devoting his entire time to the promotion of the St. Louis fair for the last four vears, and as a result of his labors he savs: "The fair will be ready to be opened on the date set. It will be complete then, and the city of St. Louis will be prepared to take care of the millions of visitors who will be there. The adverse criticism at the time of the dedication, while not well founded, has had the eflect of stimulating St. Louis people to a greater effort, and the work of providing for ihe comfort of th. attending the fair is going forward at a pace that assures the greatest measure of good accommodations for all. I may say there is not the least doubt as to the ability of the city to take care of the crowd, and that it will be done. Contracts have been let for the construction of twelve exhibit buildings, to be completed by November 1st. Four of these are now finished. The others will all be hotels have ready on the date set. Two been contracted for right at the exposition grounds, and there are a number being built in the downtown district. One of these will cost 1,000.000. There is a great pressure for space, in the manufacturers' building. Arrangements have been already made to allow the loreign exhibitors per cent of the sace, and that is as much as can be spared, do mestic manufacturers must be allowed the remainder. France wants 110.000 square feet. W- - have succeeded in finding a little more than 100.000 square feet for France, and that is not satisfactory. We have sent F. J. V. Skill, special commissioner, over there to attempt to make satisfactory adjustment of the difficulty." 15 - ?- I . 1 . -t-- 1 ? - ."'.re. 1 . ; 1 nt-..:nr- - t i ; -- ?
