The manv lynchings that have occurred re cently have led to many different compilations of statistics unon the subiect and manv erroneous statements have been made through tho compilers having failed to make complete researches. From records that are absolutely correct it has been learned that up to July 1st, during the first half of 1903, there have been forty-silynchings in the United States. There were forty-oncases in the South and five in the North. Forty of the victims of mob rule were negroes and six were white. The only Western States to participate in lynching been were Wyoming and Montana. The record of the various States shows that Mississippi leads with eleven, while Georgia follows with six. Six States have had one each. The compilation bv States shows the following result: Alabama, 1: Arkansas, 3; Delaware, 1; Florida, 5: Georgia, (; Illinois, 2; Louisiana, o; Mississippi, 11 ; Missouri, 4; Montana, 1; Tennessee, 1; Texas, 4; West Virginia, 1; Wyo- rning, I : total, 4u.
