Show 10 C4 The Salt Lake Telegram, s KIKES ARE THE UTAH COPPER CO.'S AT COLORADO SMELT ERS BIG MINING SCHEME C OMMENCED Men at Work in Several Denver Reduction Plants Walk Out at Midnight. DENVER. July 4. At midnight last night strikes were commenced at the Grant and Globe plants of the American Smelting and Refining company in this city and also at the several reduction plants of the United States Reduction and Refining company at Colorado City. The strike of the two Denver Plants was unexpected, asbigthe union leaders had yesterday, in a letter to the smelter management, disclaimed any intention of striking pending a settlement by arbitration of their demands for an eight hour day and an adjustment of the wage scale under the new conditions. Their real intention to strike was not made public until midnight, when the night shift commenced the work of pulling the fire and announcing their intention of quitting as soon as the work was done. Seven hundred men are employed at the two smelters. The strike at Colorado City was unexpected at so early a date. At 12 o'clock last night the retiring shift drew the fires at the Standard and Colorado plants, belonging to the Milling txust, and also at the Telluride mill, which is an Independent plant. About 200 are employed at each of these three plants. The strike at Colorado City Is because of a posted notice that wages would be reduced to a minimum of $2 a shift. President Moyer of the American Labor union arrived in th city yesterday from the west and it is supposed that it was on his advice that the strike was precipitated. .
