The Seattle Times story which It declares to prints be absolutely authentic, to the effect that Portland, and probably San Francisco and Ixjs Angeles, will be dropped from the Pacific National league at the meeting Monday in Taeoma. The reason for the move is that the game h3s been a losing proposition in the cities named and some or tl.o teams have not the moneythjt to stand the loss. The Portland team wi;l bo transferred to Salt Lake and the season divided, the new half beginning Juiy 7th. PORTLAND, June 27. At a meeting of the directors of the Portland Baseball club of the Pacific National league last night, a resolution was passed Instructing Dr. Emmett Drake, president of the club, to oppose at the league meeting in Taeoma Monday any attempt to transfer the Portland franchise. The directors also Instructed Dr. Drake to oppose dropping Los Angles and San Francisco, unless It is the wish of the two clubs. Dr. Drake said: "If the Portland club cannot play In thi city it will not play In any other ity. There will be no compromise with faa.lt Lake City or any other city." While it is admitted that the team haa lost money and would continue to lose money this season, the directors feel that to drop Portland from the Pacific National league would be a serious mistake when It is considered that the Lewis and Clark fair is close at hand. Root-Gardn- vr v v. i in the Jim Corbett should win the decision over Jeffries in their coming battle fighter, a jii august, Herrera has reasons to back up his opinion. He does not expect Corbett to win with a knockout punch, but he does expect to see "Gentleman Jim" put up a cleverer fight than Jeffries for the twenty rounds, and thereby "win tne decision on points. To substantiate this belief. Herrera cites the fact that Corbett stayed twenty-thre- e with Jeffries when the two men met last time, and that up to the final rounds round Corbett had the champion badly outpointed, and would have won the decision had the bout been for twenty rounds only. Herrera and his manager, "Biddy" Bishop, both expect Corbetfs clever-Jies- s to win for him, but they believe the fiprht will go the limit. "If Fitz couldn't uucK Jeffries out no fighter of today can do the trick." says Herrera, "but there ere more ways of winning a fight 'than by a knockout." v nen asked for his opinion on the fight, set for July 4th, picked Roof as the winner without hesitation. The big point in Roofs favor thi3 time, and one that he did not have in their fight here last summer, is me clean breakaway. This stvle of nerhtine handicaps Gardner fullv as much as it favors. Root, and this fact alone, in Herrera's opinion, should make Root me ravorite. tne are the ones Herrera has studied most closely, and his dope on themfighters should be as near right as anyone's. "Young" Corbett. me mexican thinks, is fully entitled to the championship, Yanger or ill"on would either one give him a hard battle. Of Yangeralthough and Hanlon, who die matched to fiht in San Francisco July 30th. Herrera picks Yanger as the winner, simply because he has had more ring experience than Hanlon. irtiKtKer iiisnop has come to the conclusion that Salt Lake Is a good fight dna 11 1S "is ambition to pull off a number of Herrera's future fights here. iae ,irsi oae ne wm work for will be a match with De for the latter part "l JUI. ana it is just possible that a handicap fight Coursay will be arranged between Joe Gans, the colored champion, and Herrera. Al Herford. the colored boy's manager, approached Bishop on the subject the day before the latter left Butte. "eriurQ orrerea to Pet that his man can stop Herrera in six rounds, but Bishop ..clM.u ins proposition so quickly that Herford has made no further advances in me matter. light-weig- J w The Evangeli PITTS HITHCJ.
