We are basically educating Utahns for Utah. A committee of the Utah Coordinating Council of Higher Education indicates that Utah will receive more money for state and local taxes as a result of research programs at the two state universities than the state will allocate for research. The Council estimates that Utah will invest about $4 million of state funds in research in the coming year. But this amount will help generate about $28 million more from sources. The estimated tax income on the research expenditures is a possible $4.8 million. So research expenditures from state tax funds clearly come back with high interest. The faculties of Utah universities are already responsible for, or have influenced, the formation of more than 23 growing companies in the state. The Utah Water Research Laboratory at Logan provides answers to water problems not only for Utah but also for our nation and other parts of the world. Further, the colleges and universities have deliberately set out to provide vital assistance to the state's existing businesses and industries. For example, Utah State University claims part of the credit for Utah agriculture's progress from pioneer times to the present. The University of Utah Bureau of Economic and Business Research assists government and business by collecting and publishing data that can be used in decision making. The University of Utah's computer center is used regularly by 20 industrial organizations, which would otherwise take some $400,000 for computer services out of state.
