Red Cross BYU Mechanical Engineers By POLLY CRAMER I use iron LEAR POLLY skillets for frying. I want to tell Bev that she can remove the built-u- p grease on the oustide of hers by building a good, hot fire in the fireplace or the back yard grille and then putting the skillet in the fire. This burns off the baked-ogrease if the pan is left long enough. I have also used oven cleaner but it takes several applications and must be done outdoors in the fresh air. Use only on the Inside of pans. Do not get this on anything else, so spread lots of old newspapers under your work. To clean rust from the Inside, rub repeatedly with a salt free oil. I also oil them after each use and then wipe well with a paper towel. They can be cleaned if you work at It. Do you have a book of household hints and how could I get one if you do? JERRY DEAR JERRY My book of Pointers is sold in paperback editions on many newsstands or It can he ordered by writing to Polly's Homemaking Pointers, co The Daily Herald at P. 0. Box 4958, Chicago, 111. 60680. Please enclose 75 cents for cost of book and handling. POLLY I want to DEAR POLLY tell Bev that if she is going to use grandmother's iron skillet she could clean it as grandmother did. When you have raked up a pile of leaves this fall, place your pan in the cen; r of the pile, burn the leaves and also the ru:t and baked-o- n grease. MRS W. C. I want to DEAR POLLY method for cleanBev give my ing baked-o- n grease off heavy black iron frying pans that do not have plastic handles. They e may be placed in the electric ovens that clean themselves automatically and be cleaned as the oven is cleaned. If you do not have a stove of this type, put them on your outdoor grille next time you have a picnic. Tho heat will burn al! the grease off and the skillet will be good as new. Of course, there will be smoke on the outside but this will wash off with soap and wtear .Rub the inside with cooking oil or unseasoned fat to season the pan. Wipe out well with paper toweling. MRS R. M. No matter DEAR GIRLS which method you use for cleaning your skillets, be careful in removing the hot skillet from the fire and do not wet it in any way while it is still warm.
