The Colorado flows many hundreds of miles from the north and - east, , down through mountain ranges, before it reaches a plateai in northern Arizona. There it turns west to cut its way through Solid rock for about itself and was worn down by weather and water. It is ' now brought again to the surface by the erosion of the Grand Canyon. On this base rest successive beds of quartzite, sandstone, and limestone. ;They were formed as age followed age, as ocean waters from the east and from the west flooded the section, and as whole mountain, ranges rose and disappeared. The fossil remains of delicate seaweed, sea shells, fishes, and plant and animal life from past geologic ages are found in these rocks. The first white man to see the Grand Canyon was a Spanish explorer, Garcia Lopez de Cardenas, who discovered it in 1540. miles down to desert beyond. The immense gorge is from 4 to 18 miles in width and more than a mile deep in certain places. Year by year the rushing waters cut deeper into the bottom of the gorge. The Colorado made the canyon; but wind, rain, and frost helped to. carve! its walls and the temples, castles, and towers of colored rock within it. As thjs river cut deep into the plateau, it laid bare on the rock walls of the canyon the story of hundreds of millions of years of earth's history.
