Who can blame hubby when he growls, "Who did you marry, anywayme or. your mother?" The answer is mama and a telephone. Telephones should be used to make to chat in person, and not be an instrument of conversation in themselves. An American friend called me the other day to ask me il I had heard the scandal about I was looking te forward to a personal with her, but she blurted out the news in one electronic gasp I must stop writing now have to call my friend back and tell her my news. "Call her?" you. ask. Oh yes, I forgot to mention it, but I, too, have caught, how do you say it "telephonitis." rifm' mmmtf pmm iijuiuwihi.jl.iiuli.1 mum ly f ( f )y ', 1 J.m (J! i K ents so-and-- D on't be ridic ! long ago I gave up the laundry starches I had to cook . . . you know, the kind that makes fabrics so stiff and "boardyv so. starch . . , the modern starch . . . the NIAGARA . . . it's wonderful ... it penetrates fabrics evenly . . . never spots or streaks, makes ironing a cinch . . . and the finish? Men's, shirts have done it for your country, too?" they usually give me a strange look and walk away. My-wi- fe hasn't been in this coiin try- as long as most Americans have. Maybe that's why she appreciates the United States as much as I do. Believe me, it's worth fighting for and working for and eyen spying for. But I'm surprised and dismayed at how many Americans consider this attitude "corny." Such feelings are dangerous when they get as widespread as they are here today. In spite of repeated warnings, Americans as a whole are still pretty simple-mindabout the Communists. They think that because the Party is underground it isinactive. That attitude is hard to accept when you see as I did a huge Union organization with hundreds of thousands of members controlled absolutely by the Communist Party. The threat of Communism in the United States is becoming steadily more serious because the Communists are working through legitimate organizaor legitimate-soundin- g -tions. The American people must realize that no tactic is to the Reds as long as it achieves their ends. God means nothing to them, nor does the American concept of fair play and justice. -- ed - out-of-bou- nds The only immediate answer I can see to the Communist problem in America is education of individual Americans to the nature and danger constant of Communism" This- publicity on Communist operations can at least serve to make Americans more alert than they are now. Communism as a system hasn't a chance when pitted against our form of government in an open battle of ideologies. But forced underground, it is eating away at the foundations of our liberty. Another question I'm asked repeatedly is: "Would you do it all over again?" Certainly I would! I feel that I was able to help our Government, and this was well worth the personal sacrifice of myself and my family. I'm certainly not the first American to do this, nor will' I be the last. Throughout our history, millions of Americans have risked or given their lives to preserve individual freedom throughout the world. I'm grateful to our Government for the chance to contribute to this cause. I only hope the things I discovered will serve as a warning to all Americans and that my family and I can now enjoy the peace and contentment we've missed for the past 16 years, amUy Weekly, July 19, 1959 19 cottons W fabrics!
