Show S DAfLY HERALD 6A WM 1 Should Be Taxed Like Other Property Roctnurnnf Mnn Blasts Spirit of Brotherhood e Plan For Strong Among Steel Road Proposed by State WorkersSays Member West-of-Lak- Editor Heerald: I woluld like to add my voice to the excellent resolution recent-l- y printed in The Daily Herajd by the Utah County Auto Dealers Association against the bypass road proposed by. the state road commission west of Utah, Lake. "truck route" This won't be a truck route at all, and anyone who has made any study of traffic or tourist patterns recognizes this fact. The trucks who would use it would be far in the minority to; the cars seeking a shortcut through our state. I can never understand how the state can worry so much about attracting tourist dollars and then spend huge amounts building highway s which and shoot the tourists, through and out ci the state so fast they scarcely know they've been in it. A search of public law will re veal that roads are to be built to serve the population of a state, not to bypass it. I think it's high .time the state road commission realized this, or the people made them realize it. scheme is This only the latest in a series of plans bv the state road commission. dominated. by Salt iake City and County interests, to bypass" Utah Valley and get all the tourist dollars, including the relative few that Utah Valley now gets. They would have! the federal freeway west of the lake if a concerted effort on the part of Utah Valley interests hadn't blocked it. Failing that, they now want to "truck route" build this which only thinly disguises their motives. They want to get any sort of a road west of there .now. Then, as the years go by, they can delay construction of the freeway through Utah County (only a very small section of it is underway west of Orem ). and finally Jiey can say, "use of this road west of Utah Lake proves that's where the, freeway should have been planned in the Jixst place." Then they will widen the "truck route" into a highspeed freeway and Utah Valley .will be . ; so-call- ed pas-senc- by-pass- er cut-off- es , west-of-the-la- ke - so-call- Editor Herald:, The bitterest pill the steel er steel-worker- ! steel-work- er sowed a mustard seed. .
