Show A-8 The Park Record Wed/Thurs/Fri, May 9-11, 2018 Obituary Ben Joseph Vallor November 7, 1922 – May 1, 2018 2018 In the early morning hours of the first day of May 2018, Ben Joseph Vallor died peacefully in the area he loved most, Park City. Ben was born Nov. 7, 1922 to Abramo and Anna Rosa Vallorani in Ascoli Piceno, Italy. In 1923, the family set sail for the U.S., settling in the Philadelphia area where Abramo was a respected tailor. In 1943, Vallor joined the Navy’s V-12 program. His service led him to MIT for 2 years, to Columbia University for officer training and upon Allied victory in Europe in 1944, he served post-war discharge duties as head of the commissary at the Washington Naval Base. It was there he met Lucille Thompson, one of the ‘WAVES.’ After discharge and completing his degree at MIT, they married in Huntington, West Virginia. The couple made their home in the Chicago area, where Ben embarked on a career engineering heating elements for appliances, first working for Hotpoint (14 years) and then owning Olsen Office Supply (3 years). He also continued his education by earning an MBA at Northwestern. Lucille died in 1980. He moved to Troy, Ohio to be a manager at the Hobart Manufacturing Company and then to its KitchenAid subsidiary as VP of Engineering. In August 1983 he married Virginia Larson. Ben Joseph Vallor Upon his retirement in 1988, he had devoted 39 years of his life to perfecting the heating units in the modern kitchen appliances we take for granted today. After retiring, he and Jinny searched for a new home out West. True to his engineering roots, Vallor created spreadsheets, comparing the climates of several western cities. Park City won out primarily because it had more days of sunshine per year than any other city they considered. Jinny, an avid skier, may also have had something to do with their decision. The happily retired couple settled comfortably into Park City life where Ben remained active in the community. He was Rotary Chairman for Park City Miners Day, a regular at the Park City Senior Center and an avid bridge player. He was also a regular at the PC MARC and on the golf course. In 2016, the Utah Honor Flight Network, a nonprofit that recognizes veterans, brought Vallor to Washington to visit the memorials that honor veterans service and sacrifice. Daughter Joan was his personal guide. During his final days, Ben was surrounded and visited by loving family and friends. His last word echoed his philosophy of success in life “Enjoy, work hard and be happy, happy.” Ben is survived by his wife Virginia, daughter Joan, stepsons Chris (Cathy), Matt (Anne) and Peter Larson and grandchildren Thomas Vallor, Nils, Ben and Hannah Larson. A son predeceased him in 2016. A celebration of life will be held in Park City at a later date. The family wishes to send a special thanks to George Heare with Apple Gate Hospice and the Elk Meadows staff for their constant care and kindness to Ben for this past month. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the purchase of a memorial bench that will be located at the PC MARC overlooking the stadium tennis court. Donations may be sent to the Ben Vallor Memorial Fund, PO Box 683959, Park City, UT 84068.
