Show Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, December 9-12, 2017 The Park Record The Park City Holiday Spectacular is ready to shine spotlight on local talent This year’s run to feature biggest cast in three years SCOTT IWASAKI The Park Record Park City’s Holiday Spectacular and Community Sing-a-Long has become a local tradition in the past three years, said director Amber Hansen. “The first year we did it, I was part of the show to help fill out the evening,” Hansen told The Park Record. “The second year, we had a larger turnout and programmed a different show for each night that included everyone who auditioned.” The show this year, which will run from Thursday to Sunday, Dec. 14-17, at the Egyptian Theatre, features the biggest cast to date. “We actually had to turn away some people because we so many people audition,” Hansen said. “We are showcasing more than 67 local performers over the four nights, so every performance will be different.” Hansen said the growth of the show is related to the high caliber of local talent. “It also shows there is a need for them to showcase their gifts,” she said. “This is one of the only true local shows that anyone can audition for and perform in. And it’s great to have local people on our stage. We have great technical abilities thanks to our state-ofthe-art sound system, video and lighting equipment.” While Hansen is the director, she said the shows couldn’t go on without Debra Cook, vocal coach and the cofounder of the Utah Conservatory. “She is our music director and has been doing a lot of the work, because the show features mainly singers,” Hansen said. Still, there are other forms of talent in the roster as well. “The Egyptian Theatre’s YouTheatre will do a reading of an original poem in the style of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,’” Hansen said. “And we’ll have musicians as well. The Park City Treble Makers will perform various renditions of Christmas and holiday music.” The evening will also include singers with guitars, and a singer who will be backed by a cellist and pianist. The performers ages run the gamut, Hansen said. “Our youngest is five and our oldest performer is older than 70,” she said. As the title states, the Holiday Spectacular will include various sing-a-longs. “It’s really a community event,” she said. “Everyone who attends will get a little treat when they come through the door. We’ll also have holiday cookies for sale. “ During the finale, Santa and his elves will make an appearance. “They’ll come out and hand candy canes to the audience,” Hansen said. “This is a great show for the whole family, and Jewish community invites all to celebrate Chanukah SCOTT IWASAKI The Park Record Chanukah starts on Wednesday, Dec. 13, and Park City’s Jewish community has invited the public to celebrate. • Chabad of Park City will host a string of Chanukah events.
