Both sides gave their final arguments Tuesday in what prosecutors said is the first case in Utah in which someone is accused of aiding and recording a suicide. Judge James Brady is expected to rule in the coming days. Defendant Tyerell Przybycien isn’t accused of wielding a murder weapon, but prosecutors argued that he’s still responsible for the death of a troubled girl whom he pushed into taking her own life. “He had a fascination with death,” prosecutor Chad Grundander said. “He used her suicidal ideations for his own purposes.” Continued From A-17 Mt. But the Salt Lake Tribune noted on Sunday that Utahns buy more electric cars per capita than California – so take that, Silicon Valley billionaires. Jackson Hole getting more connected to outside world JACKSON, Wyo. – Jackson Hole, which prides itself on its remoteness, will be even more linked to the outside world next year. American Airlines will begin offering daily flights between Jackson and Dallas next spring. Jackson Hole already has daily shoulder-season flights to Denver and Salt Lake City. The Jackson Hole News & Guide notes that the new flights to Dallas will be provided by the Defense attorneys countered that 16-year-old Jchandra Brown made her own choice on May 6 in a canyon about 60 miles south of Salt Lake City. Przybycien’s role wasn’t commendable, but it didn’t amount to murder either, his lawyer Gregory Stewart said. “While we don’t have all the video tapes we might like, I think it’s clear that ... she was directly involved in the actions that caused her death,” he said, according to the Daily Herald in Provo. The Associated Press does not typically identify juveniles in crime cases, but Brown’s mother has said she wanted her daughter to be identified to prevent anything similar from happening again. Prosecutors say Przybycien bought the rope, helped the girl tie a noose and recorded a 10-minute cellphone video of her with the rope tied around her neck before she inhaled compressed air from a canister and fell unconscious. The case carries echoes of Michelle Carter, a Massachusetts woman who encouraged her sui- cidal boyfriend to kill himself in dozens of text messages when she was a teenager. She was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. The legal difference between murder and involuntary manslaughter is the defendant’s mental state, Daniel Medwed, a law professor at Northeastern University, told the AP. Murder is intentional, while manslaughter generally involves more reckless behavior such as drunken driving. Przybycien “kind of set the wheels in motion, but there’s a problem with causation because she made the ultimate decision to take her own life,” Medwed said. Prosecutors say Przybycien laid out his intentions in Facebook messages, where he told a friend that helping Brown kill herself would be “like getting away with murder!” However, defense attorneys contend that he asked Brown several times if she truly wanted to go through with the suicide, and they pointed to notes where she said she made the decision herself. 68-passenger Bombardier CRJ700 jets. Butte, the side-by-side municipalities next to the ski area of the same name, seems to be broaching a new level of busyness as would require paid parking. The Crested Butte News reports that town officials are talking with a firm called Interstate Parking, which manages 65,000 parking spots in seven states. Among them is Breckenridge. Interstate Parking promises to raise revenue for both Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte by using a smartphonebased paid parking system. Michael Yerman, the town planner in Crested Butte, reported that an ad hoc parking committee concluded that one reason for traffic congestion in Crested Butte is because parking is “free and easy.” In Breckenridge, parking is now paid based on license plate numbers and can be done through a smartphone app or by credit card at solar-powered kiosk meters. The first hour costs 50 cents. Enforcement is provided by a team of “ambassadors,” to use the company’s phrase, who are paid $19 an hour. During winter, six a day are needed in Breckenridge but during summer only one or two. The firm wants $77,000 to provide this parking management in Crested Butte. Push to expand recycling of organics at gateway town CANMORE, Alberta – Recycling has become something of an issue in the municipal elections in Canmore, at the gateway to Banff National Park. The Rocky Mountain Outlook says several residents have been pushing to institute recycling of organic materials into a composting system. Canada altogether generally has much higher waste-diversion rates than the United States. But food waste represents 37 percent of all the trash from Canmore that is hauled to the landfill. Doit-your-self composting of organic material is banned in Canmore, because it attracts wildlife, including grizzly bears. The Outlook reports that two local residents have been pushing for organic composting such as is done in the nearby town of Banff. Mayor John Borrowman, who is seeking re-election, says he believes such organic waste recycling can occur within 4 years.
