You don’t have to work this hard. Check out the calendar in Scene for local music, events and more! The MegaMind PubQuiz is ready to celebrate its fifth anniversary. After taking May off, the PubQuiz will start up the summer season at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, at Park City Brewery, and organizer Colleen McGinn said she is looking forward to the season. “This will be our kickoff,” McGinn said during an interview with The Park Record. “The brewery has welcomed us with open arms and we’re going to have some food trucks there as well.” In addition to the Wednesday night games, which will be held the first Wednesday of the month, MegaMind PubQuiz will hold weekly matches from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, starting June 13, at Versante Hearth Bar. “We will also do monthly matches at Jeremy Ranch Country Club as well,” McGinn said. “It’s summer and we want to get everyone excited to have fun and learn something.” The schedule is a far cry from the PubQuiz’s humble beginnings in the Wasatch Brew Pub basement. McGinn and Malia Macheel worked together and got the event off the ground by writing trivia questions that covered everything from pop culture to current events. “I look back at some of the questions we did at the beginning and it’s funny because over the years we have learned how to word our questions,” said McGinn, who has been the PubQuiz’s sole organizer after Macheel moved out of state a year and a half ago. “If you don’t word it appropriately, people will get upset and come after you.” Teams of up to five members pay $5 to play. “If you want to add more, then it’s an additional $5 up to 10 people, and $2 of every $5 will go to the overall winner’s nonprofit or charity of choice,” McGinn said. The donating aspect has been with the PubQuiz since the beginning. “Everyone enjoys themselves COURTESY OF COLLEEN MCGINN MegaMind PubQuiz gamers flash their fives to signify the Park City group will celebrate its five-year anniversary this season. We told ourselves that we would start small and grow tall and I think we have grown tall...” Colleen McGinn MegaMind PubQuiz organizer “I can’t believe we’re still going strong and growing,” she said. “We told ourselves that we would start small and grow tall and I think we have grown tall.” Throughout the years, MegaMind PubQuiz has held games in various venues in the area, including Flanagan’s on Main and Chateaux Deer Valley, where it is still based during the winter. McGinn also hosts PubQuiz games for private events. “Each location has a different feel, and it’s for young and old and crosses demographics,” she said. Because of the quiz’s far-reaching topics, McGinn has stepped up her game when picking on trivia questions. “I think the brand name is a legitimate gathering for trivia and we mean business,” she said. “There are more things that people want to know about these days, and it’s been a growing process for me, because I’ve taken it under my own wing to bring information to people that I feel they should know. “We made sure we had questions about the past presidential elections that included information about all of the candidates, and not just the top two,” she said. “We also did questions about Bonanza Flat.” McGinn also refers the PubQuiz’s Facebook page (facebook.com/megaMIND. pubQUIZ/), where she encourages people to post ideas to ensure she features topics that people want to learn about. “I still have to make sure it appeals to all demographics, and make it fun,” she said. McGinn believes people return to MegaMind PubQuiz because they get to hang out with their friends, but they also learn things and help the community. “I think it shows the demand is still there and that we’ve become part of the Park City culture, and I think that says a lot about Park City,” she said. “The town has always been so enthusiastic and the local residents have such high energy. I feel like this is my way to help, but also give people opportunities to help as well. It’s been a rewarding experience for me.” MegaMind PubQuiz will celebrate its fifth anniversary and kickoff its summer season at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, at Park City Brewery, 2720 Rasmussen Road, Suite A1. The cost to play is $5 for a team of five. For information, visit www.facebook. com/megaMIND.pubQUIZ. |
