Show A-19 The Park Record Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, April 1-4, 2017 A quick look at Utah news Hatch questions running again, ban prompts training Associated Press Orrin Hatch says he may not run in 2018 if Mitt Romney does SALT LAKE CITY — Sen. Orrin Hatch says he’s still considering running for his Utah Senate seat next year but might forgo a run if former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney jumped in. Hatch told the National Journal on Tuesday that if he could get “a really outstanding person” to run for his seat, such as Romney, then he might step aside. The senator says he’s mentioned it to Romney, who lives in Utah. Messages left with Romney’s representatives were not returned. Hatch said in 2012 that his current term would be his last, but he started reconsidering several years ago. Hatch’s spokesman Matt Whitlock said many people are urging the senator to run again but his main priority is ensuring Utah residents “have the best seat at the table.” Utah governor signs hardened polygamy law over objections SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Gary Herbert has signed into law a measure that hardens Utah’s polygamy law by adding harsher penalties for polygamists convicted of other crimes such as domestic abuse. Polygamists opposed the bill, saying it is unconstitutional and unfairly targets their families. They say it will discourage people from reporting crimes like fraud or abuse. Gov. Herbert, who signed the bill late Tuesday night, didn’t immediately have comment. Lawmakers narrowly passed a bill that Republican state Sen. Kevin Van Tassell said was crafted by the attorney general’s office to prevent a “constitutional challenge” to state law. Utah’s current polygamy law is already stricter than laws in other states because it bars married people from living with a second purported “spiritual spouse” even if the man is legally married to just one woman. Trump travel ban prompts Utah refugee and immigrant training SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake City organization is hosting a series of trainings this month to make sure refugees and immigrants understand their rights under President Donald Trump’s travel ban and refugee program suspension. The refugee advocacy group says since Trump’s first order was signed it has received hundreds of questions from refugees and immigrants who are worried about being deported. Salah Omar is a refugee from Somalia who says he is terrified that under Trump’s order he could get sent back to his home country. Utah refugee attorney James McConkie said Tuesday that there has been a significant spike in the number of these refugee training events in the state since Trump’s presidency, even though the order has been put on hold by judges. Although Utah elected Trump, it has a long history of being welcoming to refugees. This brief was written by AP writer Hallie Golden. US water manager warning of snowmelt flood potential SALT LAKE CITY — Weather including rapid melts of heavy snowpack has a federal water manager warning Utah residents to watch for flooding in coming weeks. Wayne Pullan, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Provo office manager, told the Deseret News Mother Nature has thrown the region what he called a “knuckleball” this year, and higher flows than usual are expected in Cache and Utah counties. He said downstream water associations and conservancy districts are already releasing water from dams to make room for coming snowmelt. Pullan added reservoirs are expected to fill and some dams are likely to spill, including East Canyon and Upper Stillwater. The Ogden River below Pineview Dam is a particular concern to Pullan. He said 30 major and 19 minor bureau dams in Utah, southwestern Wyoming and parts of Idaho and Nevada are routinely inspected for structural integrity. Ann Romney: Son Josh may run for governor SALT LAKE CITY — Ann Romney says she thinks her son may run for Utah governor in 2020. Romney said on the “Today” show on Monday that she is encouraging him to do it, so he can make a difference. The Deseret News reported that Josh Romney, son of former presidential candidate Mitt Romney, has said he is considering running for the position. Josh Romney is a Salt Lakebased real estate developer, and has said that many people have asked him to run for political office. Republican U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz has said he is taking “a serious, serious look” at running for governor. Republican Gov. Gary Herbert will complete his second term at the end of 2020. Utah Lake State Park marina dredging project postponed PROVO, Utah — A $1.3 million dredging project that was planned to begin in April at the marina at Utah Lake State Park is being delayed, probably until after Labor Day. Park manager Jason Allen told the Standard-Examiner the postponement comes with water levels rising and spawning season about to start for the lake’s endangered June suckers. There were also few bidders for the job. Allen told the Daily Herald the first-ever dredging will involve walling off water to drain the marina. Up to 3 feet of soil and rock will be removed to deepen the boat harbor, and work should be complete by May 2018. Low water levels last year had the lake at its lowest level since 2004, with water at the marina at 3 feet or less. 801.274.9500 or 435.655.6612 SPRING into SavINGS!
