Chalada The Park Record Summit County Economic Development Director Jet “Propulsion” Jones announced Friday that Park City and Summit County have jointly entered into a high-stakes bidding effort to convince GalaXy to build its next rocket launch pad at Richardson Flats. GalaXy celebrated the world’s first successful launch and landing of a previously used rocket on Thursday. Following the widely publicized event, GalaXy founder Nylon Musk invited communities far, far away from the current launch facilities in Florida to offer potential sites for his company’s next endeavor: establishing an interplanetary transit center for a planned colony on Mars. Citing Park City and Summit County’s quest to earn the prestigious Georgetown Energy Prize and previous efforts to attract high-tech business ventures like Goggle and Hypersnoop, Jones says the local region has a lot to offer a forward-thinking company like GalaXy. According to Jones, the topography at Richardson Flats already has an other-worldly feel to it and very few residents will be impacted by the launches. Jones also hinted that talks are already underway to partner with VailX chief Bob Catz to offer free EpiX passes to all GalaXy employees. When asked to confirm his involvement, Catz responded, “Hey, we may be building a ski resort on Mars one of these days and a local launch pad could offer Park City EpiX pass holders the opportunity to ski Jupiter Bowl in the morning and the Hellas Planitia Crater on Mars in the afternoon -making VailX the biggest ski resort company in the galaxy!” Catz said Musk spent spring break in Park City last year and was excited to see how many locals were already driving his company’s solar-powered vehicles. “Parkites really get the alternative-energy message,” Musk said, adding that there will be lots of affordable housing available on the red planet. “I think the next generation of seasonal employees will get a big kick out of interplanetary commuting.” There will be a fundraiser for the initiative with a bake sale at the Richardson Flats parking lot on Saturday afternoon, April 1. Supporters are asked to wear their best Valien costumes to the event.
