Razing of the structure was begun late in February and complete removal is expected by the end of April. The ground has been sold to an oil company. The church, built in the early 1900's, was one of four built following the division of the original American Fork Ward in July 1901. Each of the four wards found temporary meeting places until new churches could be erected. The First Ward arranged to meet in the Music Hall of William Grant's Emporium. In 1902 a building committee had made plans to build a new church and by September of 1903 brick was being laid. Thomas Featherstone Jr. and Stephen Featherstone had contracted to lay the brick for $625. In May of 1904 the new meeting house was occupied for the first time by the ward members. It had been erected by 126 families at a cost of $8416.75 or about $64 per family. In 1910 an addition on the north, a Relief Society room, two upper and two lower class rooms were added at a cost of $2511.24, bringing the building's value at that time to $10,952.99. Until February of 1946 the church was occupied by the membership of the old First Ward, and following the ward's division the remaining First Ward members continued to use the church and the new Fifth Ward members utilized the Al pine Stake Tabrenacle. February 17, 1957 marked the 50th anniversary of the dedica tion of the old First Ward church, and on that date the new beautiful $235,000 First-Fift- h Ward church was dedicated. The older members of the two wards will cherish memories of the little old red brick church, which had become such a familiar landmark to people approaching American Fork from the east on U. S. Highway $1. The ser mons, the testimonies borne by members long since gone, the plays, the socials and the good fellowship have enshrined the church in the memory of many. - FORK E.-S- th PROVO SEVENTEENTH.
