Show MONDAY, JULY 29, 1957 Utah County, Utah DAILY HERALD Scholarship to Vocational School Won by Orem Youth Utah Poultry and Farmers Coop- - erative's annual tuition scholar- ship to attend the Central Utah Vocational School in the field of farm mechanics has been awarded to Riley Carter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leland Carter of Orem, Utah. Mr. Carter was graduated from Orem High School in June of this year and plans to enroll at the Central Utah Vocational School in the field of farm mechanics for a course. Riley is in partnership with his father in the operation of a fish farm in Or'em's Carterville area. Rainbow trout are produced in the cool spring waters of the farm and mm two-ye-ar shipped into New Mexico alive by tanker truck. Riley says he needs the training in order to better qualify him for the operation, care and repair of farm machinery that is so greatly used in today's farming if I Uur MM.. St' v' V . operations. Last year Jimmy Fisher of Pro-v- o received the scholarship and two years ago Keith Prior of Lehi was the recipient. .... From Mirror Lake the boys hiked 12 miles to Pine Island in the Wilderness Recreation Area, about 33 miles above Kamas. The 6V2 hour hike was the longest on foot trip most of the boys had ever undertaken. Dehydrated trail pack rations were used exclusively to lighten tiie load, with fish caught by the boys during the camp-o- ut adding variety to the dehydrated food. LEHI A school year Alpine District has been announced showing 174 school days for children and 181 days for teachers. School opening has been set for Sept. 3, when registration for junior and senior high school students will take place, while elementary schools will start in regular session. Teachers will attend workshops and faculty meetings on Aug. 29, and 30. On Oct. 10, 11 and 12 all instructors will take part in the annual convention of the Utah Education Association in Salt Lake City, which will be the first break of the schoolvear for the children. Schools will also be in recess on Friday Oct. 18, and Monday Oct. 22, when a census enumeration will be conducted by the teachers. This time can be used by students for late farm work or deer hunting. Nov. 23 and 29. will be Thanksgiving recess while Christmas vacation will begin Friday Dec. 21, with the closing of school. Schools in 1958 will open on Jan. 6, with a spring vacation to start Wednesday March 12, at noon through Thursday and Friday. Graduation exercises for four junior high schools has been scheduled for Tuesday May 27, and the four senior high schools will conduct commencement exercises on Wednesday May 28. Rogers, Beldon Thornton and Mrs. Mae Jacklin, trailers by Warren Weeter and Mr. Thornton, and pack saddles by Leonard Walker and Blaine Farley. Bishop Leon Walker's truck was used for the trip to Mirror Lake, with cars being taken by several committeemen. Explorer Leader Scott expressed appreciation for the fine support given the trip project by the Bishopric, committeemen and ward members. The explorer committee members lor the Lindon Post include Keith Wilkinson, chairman, and Arthur Blain, Don Anderson and Beldon Thornton.
