"The Brag and Cuss," Votolato's most recent album that was released in June of 2007, marked a turning point in his life, he said. Aside from the more country and folk sounds that reflect his birthplace of Carrolton, Texas, the album was also a vehicle for Votolato to overcome his own pride and fixation on worldly things, he said. "It is a play on an old Civil War hymn," Votolato said of the title. "The idea is that when you get too wrapped up in yourself, or anything you would be bragging about, or too involved in things of this world, you fall." Votolato said the album reflects his personal journey through life.
